Sounds like your neck of WY has missed what we've had here in Idaho. Been getting snow every day since.... since... Saturday or Sunday and more to come.
In answer to the original question/post, I do believe what you encountered was when the winds aloft carry the precipitation and they can scatter about miles away, thus having sunshine and snow at once.
If I'm wrong, someone, feel free to correct me. I know there's a term for this, but I'm not in a research mood
