Where I grew up, we had a siren. It was tested every Friday as a noon whistle. Just to make sure it worked. Originally, it was installed for the Cuban Missile crises but as that threat died away, it because the Tornado siren.

When I was about 10 or so, we had a Friday off from school. I was about 6 or 7 blocks from the house and the Siren went off. I fun all the way home thinking there was a tornado coming. It was perfectly clear outside, not a cloud in the sky. Just a conditioned response because the Siren went off. Took me about 10 minutes to realize it was Friday and it was the normal test. But it was the first time in my life I had heard it when I wasn't in school.
