| Re: The kid that was killed by a bear in Utah. I heard it - didn't recognize the campground but assumed it was around Timpanogas. I've walked and climbed all of those mountains and canyons - hadn't seen a bear that close - closest was all the way up towards Strawberry Resevoir - which is several miles (30?) to the west and much higher but on the same path.
This is the area between Lone Peak and Sundance - which is a fairly public wilderness being close to both Salt Lake and Provo with loops from Park City and Heber ... I'm a bit surprised as well.
Reminds me of the days I used to put a gallon can of opened mint-jelly outside my tent to attract the bears at night - so they would wake me to get up and restoke the fire before it went out. Worked almost every time.
Not to make light of this tragedy - but I keep telling folks - the Rockies ain't for everybody.
