It would be only fair to mention that not all of these lakes are the wonderful, dip-your-feet-in, bring the boat type of lakes. Some are really, really tiny - equivalent to a pond on a farm - and briney or, sulfury or, hematitic(iron) or, just plain nasty or, loaded with leeches! Others are pristine, fairly large, teeming with fish and abundant with surrounding wildlife - matter of fact, I once came upon an animal in the far north that I still have not been able to identify! Was larger than a puma, larger than a giant otter - but was neither! I suppose I might have been lucky it didn't eat me!! Also, northern Minnesota is the actual headwaters of the mighty Mississippi River and there are swamps and even quicksand that can reach right up and surprise you during a passive walk in the woods! Nothing like catching a Northern Pike though ... except maybe pulling up a barracuda! And never, ever forget to grab a piece of pie in the town of Effie!
