I'm 100% opposed to the border fence. I know, this is a humor thread, but I gotta say that this fence thing is really bizarre. Why haven't we taken the first, most obvious step toward slowing illegal immigration --- punishing anyone who hires them? Because politicians are cowards and don't want to lose the money they get from all those lobbyists!
If we eliminated the demand for illegals, we wouldn't have very many. We demand them, so they come. Now we're going to demand them AND build a fence? That's illogical (and ecologically dangerous and ugly and fascist and authoritarian!)
The second step should be to empower the INS and border patrols so that their hands aren't tied when dealing with immigrants. The whole immigration process in the USA is a scam. We allow millions of illegals to be here because they save our corporations money on labor, but we deport legitimate political refugees who are well-educated and contributing more than cheap dry-wall installations.
I know from experience, I dated a refugee from Bosnia whose family was chased out by the Serbs. She was 13 when a Serbian militia raided her town, burned her house while pointing a gun to her head as she knelt in the street watching everything she owned go up in flames, and her mother screamed at the soldiers not to rape the girl (which they WERE doing with most other kids) --- fortunately she was spared the rape but her family had to flee.
She arrived in the USA when she was 19 and at the age of 25 she was deported for not having proper documentation, in spite of the fact that she had a 5 year old son and had been working legitimate high-skilled jobs the whole time she was in the States. Meanwhile, the below-minimum-wage illegals get to stay because corporate profiteers and their political bedfellows love that cheap labor.
It's truly sick. The fence is just a distraction from the real issues and it's a typical Republican response to problems that Republicans don't really care about. But many of you buy into it because you think with your emotions instead of your brains. (humor thread turns sour.... LOL
