I got that rather bizarre piece of advice when I lived in Austin ... it seems that at certain seasons the jellyfish (Portuguese man o'war, which are rather venomous) wash up on the beach. At such times the only you can do there is put on some serious foot armor and go stomp cnidarians. | This is very true.. Also watch out for Sting rays, and the occasional shark. On the beach watch out for Rattlers, and the occasional gator. =)
