Bears

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears while in the field. They advise that campers wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. They also advise campers to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear.

It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity.

Campers should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear dung. Black bear dung is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear dung is larger and has little bells in it and smells like pepper spray.

Re: Bears

cute!!! Thanks for the smiles!

After having lived in Alaska I can say we had seen our share of bears. But what fastinated me was the moose all over and in the city stopping traffic. I was amazed at how big those things really are!!!

Re: Bears

Love the cat/bunny Azi. Wendy...we are going camping in Northern CA soon. I read on the state park site that bears are a consideration when camping in the Sierras. We are to keep all food in the lockers provided or locked in car covered up out of site. Food is to be sealed in air tight containers...and lotions, sunscreen, soap, anything with a scent is to be sealed and stored...bad idea to keep any food in a tent.:)

Also explains how to scare a way black bear. Pots and pan noises, group of people yelling together. I'm hoping to find campgrounds with lots of folks...hoping the noise and scent of folks keep them away.
