I was surprised to read as I was perusing an article in the paper that Coalinga is the sixth largest city in California. I wouldn't have thought that. You never hear about it except for the earthquake that hit there some years ago. What kind of town is it? A nice place? Anybody ever lived there. I see signs pointing to it off of I-5 but never thought of getting off the freeway and taking a look. And is it just me or does it remind you of another ...um, similar sounding word? --'rocco |

Could you possibly be mistaken? I'd lean more towards it being the sixth fastest growing city rather than the sixth largest. Last I read the population is right around 20,000 and there are plenty of cities surpassing that by leaps and bounds. It's a small, charming community that back in the 'quake of the early 80's really showed their true colors by standing by one another and their neighbors. I know, I was there. Not during the earthquake, but with Red Cross delivering food to those who had no power and/or gas. That was probably the most education I ever got, hands on at the age of 17. I even missed school for that, my teachers understood and had me write papers on the subject although it was on record as unexcused absences. It's also home of the Annual Horned Toad Derby during Memorial Day weekend and the days just prior to it. Their main sources of employment and income are Pleasant Valley Prison and Harris Ranch. If I miss any area of CA, it's Coalinga. |

hmmm, I may have read that wrong. Yeah, that's why it surprised me. I couldn't believe it would be the sixth largest city. I'll do some research on it and be back. --'rocco |

AAAhhhh! So right you are! That's it ...and makes sense. I think that's where I either mis-read it or the article mis-quoted from the city of Coalinga's website. I just went there and they stated exactly what you said. They are 60 miles SW of Fresno, California's sixth largest city. Jeez, I couldn't fathom that they'd be big enough to be the sixth largest city. Oh, I'm so embarrassed now. Memo to self: Self, do some research if something doesn't sound right BEFORE posting lest you'll embarrass yourself on said message board. --'rocco |
