Considering move from East Coast to San Diego - Looking for guidance...?

My husband, myself and our 4 year old daughter may be moving to San Diego, CA from Virginia. We'll be visiting there in January to try and familiarize ourselves with the area. Looking for opinions on safe but affordable areas that have great school districts. As a side note, we understand affordable in VA is going to mean something very different in CA. Our affordable is 3bdrm housing/condos no more than 400k in a decent neighborhood/school district. Can be outskirts of SanDiego, but no further than 40 minute commute to downtown SanDiego.

Any other thoughts you have, I really would appreciate. Thanks so much and happy holidays!
