70 Hour Work Week?

I just got through reading an article that says to get ahead, a 70 hour work week is the new standard.

How many of you are coming close to that?

Re: 70 Hour Work Week?

I have pulled a few 80 hour work weeks. I hated it. We Americans work too hard. Look at our work habits over other countries. We maybe more productive with less hours worked and a higher wage, with a longer vacation time. But then what do I know.. heh heh.

im with PDXnative on this one.. I want more free time to enjoy my new home city. =)

Re: 70 Hour Work Week?

In the trucking world it is a 70 hour work week, only there is no "getting ahead" to be found

80-90 hours a week are not uncommon. Salaried so 45-90 makes no difference on pay. Cleozmom, I used to be OTR and I know where you are coming from.

Re: 70 Hour Work Week?

I was thinking of going OTR at one time. It's a lot of hours but don't you get some rejuvenation time?

By the new HOS rule (Hours of Service), those who come to the end of their 70 hours, which by the way includes actual driving along with what is called on-duty not driving, you must shut down. If you can gain hours the next day, by subtracting hours at the start of the week that have now fallen off, then you can use those hours. However, if you've had a zero hour day (day off at home sitting, what have you) then you sit for 34 hours to restart your week.

The 34 restart was the only decent thing to come of the "new" HOS rules.

It breaks down further by also the end of day and how much you have to take time off, but wasn't going to go into too much detail because by now you're probably dozing off with the thrills and chills of being governed by DOT, FMCSA and all the other big brothers out there.

Still have my CDL, however haven't been in a truck since '98 and still know all this.... sheesh

Re: 70 Hour Work Week?

I'm very fortunate...I'm a stay-at-home Mom, now. My husband is the GM for a movie theatre. He is salaried and probably works between 38 and 40 hours a week, although the pay isn't incredible. When we were in Baton Rouge, because of the work ethic of the employees there, he would easily work 60 to 70 hours a week. One of the few reasons I LOVE it in Navarre.

Is now a bad time to bring up the Reagan years and my "I told you so" speech?

Re: 70 Hour Work Week?

I used to Drive for SWIFT.. man I hated that job. I was never home. I have 3 small kids 8,11,14. Swift was real good at promissing the moon, and then not delivering on that promiss. 6 weeks out and only 3-4 days at home. they say a day for each week your out.. thet never did that.

Well, okay. but just a quickie.
To those who were around California with me in the '70's, immediately after Gov. Reagan had finished destroying that once great state - and to those who were paying me any mind at all immediately prior to the 1980 elections .......... I TOLD YOU SO!!
