Question about Truck Laws

I have 3 kids, and have a Chevy 1500 Truck. I have a camper shell on it and I went out and got a bench today for it from a junk yard I am gonna install in the bed, from a Isuzu Tracker, with seat belts bolted to the bed as well. I was wondering what the law says about kids riding in the back of the truck cross country? I want to be legal and safe for them. Not to mention comfortable.

Re: Question about Truck Laws

When I was a kid I used to ride in the trunk of my grandpa's car when Grandma and Grandpa took me to the park. No seat belts there. Don't think it was legal, but sure was fun. :)

Re: Question about Truck Laws

Thats freakin Perfect.. that needs to be sticked on this forum some place. Thank You!

Edit: Only thing is is a camper shelled bed still considered an open bed? I know sounds silly to ask that.. but laws you never know.

Re: Question about Truck Laws

Watch out for carbon monoxide, shells have a tendency to suck it in depending on how the windows are open .

Re: Question about Truck Laws

Whats not safe about it? They will be seated, they have restraints, and they are not just loose in the back.

CG, I thought about that too. The police said to make sure the back door is closed and latched and the side windows opened for ventilation. They said driving down the highway would prevent any carbon monoxide from entering the vehicle.

So yeah I went by the police station this morning and asked the desk sgt, if what I had set up was legal or not. He said I didnt have to have the seat or belts with the shell on the bed.. it was no longer open bed. But he said that with the added restraints and the seat it appeared safer, they still sit low in the bed, and they will be belted in.. So I got the aprroval of the Police dept. So I am no longer worried.

I was really curious about that...I'm glad you checked everything out with the police. Drive defensively and be careful...precious cargo.

Re: Question about Truck Laws

Pan,

Safe? Well, like the old saying goes. When I was growing up, I stood on the seat next to my dad while he was driving. On a Sunday, my brother and I stood in the back of the truck. Years later, when I got married and started a family, I dug out my old baby bed. Going to refinish it. I noticed all the lead base paint had been eaten off the ends. Oh well.

It's going to depend on states. For instance, when I was in California, you could not have people in the back unless they had 42 inches of clearence. Most shells are only about 38. But I bought one that goes up in the back. So it qualified. But other states had no restrictions.

I think with the seat and restraints, you've done everything responsible that you can.

Wyoming has gotten completely rediculous. Child safety seat until they are 9 years old.

open front side windows not back side windows. exhaust is on right rear
do not open R R window .also if you are towing a trailer it messes up the air flow, a tall topper creates a vacuum on the backside of truck,

I have to be devil's advocate, but might you want to check with your insurance agent as well?
