Does anyone ever play family games anymore?

We are about to sit down with some friends of ours to play some games and I was just wondering if anyone else even does that anymore. Our favorite games are CatchPhrase, Guesstures, Pictionary and Cranium. We do this almost every Friday evening and we have so much fun. What are some favorite games? Please keep this family-friendly...even if you have the urge to try and be funny.

Yeah....when it's just the two of us, no holds barred...we play Twister.

I love Scrabble...it's a game that actually increases one's vocabulary...I'm definitely keen on that! We also play Boggle every once in awhile. I think that if more families played games together, there would be more bonding time and less time for kids to get into trouble. Just my thoughts. Some of my fondest memories were when we would all get together and play games or sing with the guitar or piano.

Great mental visual! Maybe he would be a little better behaved at Tiddly Winks?

That's just not right. I can remember my kids and I playing scrabble, or twister or whatever. But we're all apart now. One is in Iraq, one colorado, Nebraska, Texas, two in Wyoming, one in Rapid City. Twister just doen't work for us. I'd love it. Just need to get all the youngun's in one area to do that. hahahahahaha

Scrabble is cool. I use to play it all the time with my father inlaw who cheated. He would make up words.

I used to think he was making up words but when I challenged him, he ended up being right.

We're INCREDIBLY competitive...but in a fun way, if that makes sense. Hey, anytime you're in the area, let me know...you're always welcome to the most beautiful place in the world!

Yeah, Twister wouldn't really work right now unless you had REEEAAALLLLY long arms and legs!

Unfortunately, our family is all over the U.S., also. My parents and brother are isolated in Minnesota, hubby's parents are in Vegas, one of his brothers is in San Antonio and the other is in Phoenix. I hear what you're saying!

It's great to play games around the table. Our DD loves monopoly.

Xbox has Pacman, Galaga, and all of the other classics. I prefer classics to the newer games and Xbox has them!!!

I think I could easily become an addict if we had an Xbox. It's not that I don't WANT one....

Re: Does anyone ever play family games anymore?

One of the fun family games we had was Weiny soup.

When I was in the military, we got paid twice a month. 1st and 15th. Times were tough. So a lot of times we'd have weiny soup. that's when you boil the hotdogs, but you put the hotdog back in the fridge and just eat the soup. Then, on payday, you'd actually get to eat the weiny. Make the normal soup and then flip the weiny on the table and let the kids scramble for it.

Re: Does anyone ever play family games anymore?

My 6 1/2 year old learned to play Mancala at her after school program... She is really good at it and she usually wins!!! I have to pay close attention to try and keep up with her!!

http://www.nik.co.uk/index.php/category/games/

... You have seven small pits in front of you. Six of these hold small stones - four in each to begin with - that you pick up and drop into other pits in an anti-clockwise direction around the board. Every time you pass your seventh small pit, which is called your reservoir, you drop a stone into it and then continue around the board.

Then when we are almost ending the game she asks if I want to try "Empty Pockets or most pebbles?" ... at which time I quickly estimate the amount of pebbles in her reservoir as compared to mine.... needless to say.. I usually try to go for empty pockets!!! :)

I have a feeling that she will be more of a gamer than I ever was.... She also likes to play chess... but I usually go along with the Mancala to save time.

My brother and I made up this game. We would be lounging while we exchanged songs. We would go back and fourth singing a few words to the song till we couldn't remember any more. The one that couldn't remember lost. I know it was a little corny but it was kind of fun.

Re: Does anyone ever play family games anymore?

I always loved to play Monopoly........ When I was a teenager I finally killed my mom and brother on it because I was such a shark nobody wanted to play me anymore. I guess it ceases to be fun when you owe the other person all the time (my brother and mom owed me), and the bank has to borrow money from YOU..... haha I had to buy 3 monopoly sets to get enough money to go round.

I play Apples to apples every now and then. When I was a kid I liked Stratego. I still ply cribbage and chess when ever I can find someone to play with. I also used to play this game with my cousins that had something to do with the NYSE It was fun and educational, even if I didn't realize the educational part as a kid. Can't remember the name of it now but it was a blast to play.
