When it comes to talent, songwriting, intensity and style I would have to go with Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20. I've seen him in concert each tour and actually preferred the older tours because it was a more intimate setting with fewer people. He sounds even better in person. Lately, I've heard so many singers on live shows who do not impress me with their skills whatsoever! Some are good, but none that I've ever seen in concert compare with Rob Thomas. He has a song for every mood that most people can relate to.

I love Green Day, censored. Their singing talent was a little disappointing, live, but I love the songs. I listen to Green Day while working out, walking or doing tedious tasks and it really helps.

Some country notables would be Alison Krauss, Mark Chesnutt, George Strait and Bryan White. All were phenomenal, live.

My very favorite song by Alan Jackson is "Song for the Life". I listened to country all the time in San Antonio. Nothing like two-steppin' all night long!

Re: If you had to pick one singer or band as your favorite, who would it be and why?

Hard question - so many considerations.
My answer is easy though. The only singer/songwriter who made a true impact on the 20th century inspiring others to make an impact themselves was Bob Dylan. Ever listen to him sing ... really? His notes are perfect - he can squeeze 20 nasally steps into one word ... and they're all in perfect pitch! Comes from being a little Jewish boy - like Neil Diamond I guess.
After that, it would be Robbie Robertson's work with the Red Road Ensemble. Then, the Beatles, then Neil Young, then Steven Stills, then The Dead ... and at least a hundred others.
No country singers on my list - or country bands. That's all "once in a blue moon" stuff for me. I prefer music myself.
(Please, just put the ice-pick down).

I should have known, Odie! Bob Dylan. I definitely prefer the Beatles and either one of the Neil's. What about Elvis? He was able to sing most anything from gospel to rock to the blues. Stevie Wonder...there's another extremely talented musician. Odie, have you ever listened to Green Day? I think you would REALLY like their lyrics...you and PDX for sure.

No, I knew who they were...except for Joey Bishop...but I had never heard them lumped together as a group called the Brat Pack. I lived in Battle Lake, MN, where the population was 764...I was slightly sheltered. Besides that, my parents listened to Elvis, Carol King and Mac Davis. We started wearing legwarmers in the 90's. Just kidding.

I want to just jump in and say ... YR! Half the people in MY generation didn't know who the Rat Pack was - I find it at least a little incredible that you do ... and like them. Talk aboutcher Retro!

KC, just have to mention that "The "Brat" pack consists of Brittney Spears, Paris Hilton and a few others.
I want an investigation into YR's age.

My Father being a Sammy Davis Jr fan probably had alot to due with it. Some of the music I listen to will surprise most. Jazz, Bebop,Retro as you call it, And Still listen to todays music, Rap, hard rock, rock, country, and modern bluegrass. Normal bluegrass as well Can't listen to just one. Variety is like the essence of life. As Shelly puts it I am well rounded. LOL She must be as well though, As even before we where together, she Knew the lyrics to the music I listened to for the most part.

I certainly agree that variety is better than immersion in one particular genre. I have cousins in the bluegrass-business - and despise modern(?) bluegrass - but listen to it anyway. If somebody would just put a dobro in there, I would do much better. I grew up playing classical piano ... rewrote nearly all except for Mozart by the time I was 7 years old. Don't like it. Too predictable and not rousing unless you happen to be sleeping ... but I still listen to some. I'm actually a folk-rocker who loves electric power-riffs but plays mostly the blues anymore. I love to play Native A but it's not as easy playing flute on a keyboard and have it sound real as you might think.
I was stuck in a little "recorder" for a few years working in the mountains - little space-capsule type of thing with computer-boxes, printers, cameras, blasters and radios - with a Canadian who loved to goof on show-tunes all day ... simply cannot get his horrible version of "When the shark bites ..." out of my head. Might I suggest a little Native American now and then as well? You can pick it up on internet-radio at "Gathering of Nations.com"

There are so many great songs an talented song writers out there I don’t think you can nail it down to just one . it’s more like at what particular time in life did you like what .
Woody I figured you for a Bob Dylan or Woody / Aerlo Guthrie guy. What about Hall an Oats, zz top, Doobie brothers ,Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Moody Blues, Queen , Sheena Easton , ELO , Bruce Springsteen an if you went through disco there was Dona summer the queen , there just so many good ones in country an then easy listing love songs , Dan Hartman, I can dream about you , an a ton of others . Kimber I gota tell ya, for me that is a unanswerable question . I just have to wide of a range of music I enjoy . Sorry

CGeorge, thanks for mentioning my name. I need the PR - and since you did, I'm going to respond to your post as if it were a question:
Yes - big Woody Guthrie fan and of course Arlo is one of my generational favorites. Also like Blind Lemon Jefferson and Brownie McGee along with Happy Traum (Night Court Theme - among many others), Leonard Cohen (the real "Baby Blue"), etc.
Let me also mention my one country hero - singer/songwriter Jimmy Webb.
now: Hall & Oates - Daryl Hall has a more perfect voice than Elvis did. Their 70's stuff was real enjoyable for me.
Doobie Brothers - okay, but a little late for my tastes. Much better when Michael came on board.
Eagles - fantastic original sound at the beginning. I think I actually preferred the original set-up ... but I was also a James Gang fan early on so the addition of Joe Walsh didn't bother me at all. I used to play with a fella who played with one of them in high-school. Henley has impressed me now for many years although I didn't like him at first.
Fleetwood Mac ... uh ... which Fleetwood Mac? You just can't beat that early stuff "Bare Trees", for example. The line-up with Stevie Nicks, Lindsay Buckingham and Christine McVie was great and a really impressive array of material - still current.
Moody Blues - the first group to combine religious commitment with making music. Last saw them in concert about '88 and it was a great show!
ZZ TOP - almost skipped them. Hey, it's easy to make greatly timed music with a 3-man band ... but they still do it right. Thump, Thump, brother.
Queen? Sheena Easton? - I'll pass on that one. Queen's fame is assured.
ELO - having a rich classical background, I was immediately impressed with taking a chamber-orchestra into rock-and-roll. They did great, some really impressive innovations and Jeff Lynnne (sp?) turned out to be a totally excellent producer - Travelling Wilburys were waaay over the top.
I've spent the last 20 years asking "Who the hell is Bruce Springsteen?" - a rock-n-roll wannabe who stuck with it long enough to make it happen. Slightly twisted but well-intentioned. I prefer Tom Petty - who made it happen right off the bat but have nothing against Springsteen.
Donna Summer? I ain't going there.
I am not familiar with Dan Hartman.
Yeah, George, there's a doggone million of 'em. Thank Goodness.
I was into R&B when everybody else was into early rock - James Brown, Major Lance, Sam Cooke, Dinah Washington, Ike Turner (the inventor of rock and roll). I didn't like the Stones until '76. Now ... they ARE 76!!!!!

I know, Curious, but I was just hoping to get some people talking about other things besides my obsession with politics and world issues.
Remember Duran Duran, White Lion, and Warrant? How about ABBA, Prince, Elvis Costello, Dan Fogleberg, Everclear, and Bryan Adams?

The only reason I chose Rob Thomas is because I've never bought all the cd's from a singer or group and really enjoyed every single song. His passion when he sings is a bonus, also. I love all types of music...Odie, speaking of recorders, I'm learning to play...it's much more difficult than the flute, but the warm, hollow sound is so beautiful. Celtic music is fascinating to me, also.

I love Everclear's style. Yes, I do like Enya...very soothing and relaxing. The 80's had a bunch of great music, though.

I saw Ozzy, not too long ago, and said he was clean and sober for the first time in his life. I was almost able to understand him...almost. I like his voice. Korn...haven't had much experience with. Some of my friends used to listen to them in San Antonio, but I was more into country, then.

Sure, but keep in mind that I love the song styles and voice of Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day. They're all so catchy. I love a great hook. I'm really picky about songs. The only cd's I'll listen to without stop are Matchbox 20 and Green Day (only American Idiot).

Re: If you had to pick one singer or band as your favorite, who would it be and why?

BerCud; Congrats on trying the recorder. I love flageolet (Indian Flute) but have to listen as I have no talent for blowing into anything except my soup!
BTW, I was a big Fogelberg fan myself - at least his first 3 albums ... which were all written while he was still in high-school.
Now let's see, what was I going to say ... Oh yeah - I remember now.
I totally stopped listening to radio starting in 1980 and didn't start again until the mid-90's because, for me, there was no new original talent ... I mean, seriously, things were so bad that even Elton John was able to mount a comeback!!! However, I did enjoy April Wine at first. No matter where I was playing in the 80's, people would ask for 70's music, 60's music ... even 50's music (jeepers) but almost nobody was asking for the new 80's stuff - and if I recall correctly, there was Cheap Trick, Supertramp, Boston and ... well, that's about it - all knock-off bands. Even played with some guy from Boston once ... thought he really sucked ... just riff after riff after riff after riff but nothing of substance. Most of my crowd was younger than me then - but they preferred me to put on some Abbey Road or some such ... and a lot of folks dropped KISS as soon as I played them some 80's Dylan. Saw Kiss - btw - before they cut an album. Frampton's album was brand new then - to give you an idea of how freaking long ago that was. I'd just inhaled something in the mall record shop when these really freaky looking guys walked in looking like space aliens. They walked around the mall about 3 times - with the crowd of 8 year olds growing and growing ... then they walked out. About a month later, their album came out. I actually ended up liking them because at least, they were playing straight-forward rock and roll.

The flageolet...I'm going to have to check that out. I love the soft, hollow, almost eerie sound of flute-type instruments. Funny you mention Boston...that is actually one of my favorites, also. The lead singer had a very unique voice that I liked.

So, you actually saw KISS before they made it big? Gene Simmons is an incredibly shrewd businessman and seems very intelligent. He's still collecting on Kiss.

Re: If you had to pick one singer or band as your favorite, who would it be and why?

I would have to say my favorite song as of now is "Remember When" by Alan Jackson. It really relates to my and my DH. The first time I heard it a few years ago, I cried my eyes out. It's a beautiful song.
