I was wondering why we haven't changed the clocks yet.

Sunday, November 4 (the first Sunday in November) at 2 a.m., Daylight Saving Time ends in the United States. This year, Daylight Saving Time is four weeks longer than last year with the passage of the Energy Policy Act in 2005.

Re: I was wondering why we haven't changed the clocks yet.

If you're needing the real technical reason - sorry - this ain't it (unless I google it up).
My take on it is: In the midst of all this serious, life-and-death stuff going on in the world and here, at home ... some durned fool with power wanted to do something really stupid!!
I believe it has something to do with saving heating fuel in business units or somesuch.
** after googling it ... dig this Izzy ... It's Bush's Fault! Not only that - according to what I read ... it's permanent! A measure to save a bit of energy by extending DST another month overall - 3rd week of March to 1st week of November - and by the way, it's my birthday later this month - I want to see a bunch of drunks posting during the third week! Izzy, overloading on water will do for you.
Peace

Re: I was wondering why we haven't changed the clocks yet.

I get a kick out of the "energy savings" that it is supposed to do.

First off, the thermostat is set for a particular temperature. The furnace heats to that temp when needed. It doesn't pay any attention to what time it is, or if it's dark or light, if it's cold it heats.

Secondly, they did this so that people would use less energy in their homes because they would work later into the dark. Ok, so if you don't have your lights on at home, you have your lights on at the office, right? And your office doesn't have just one reading lamp over your chair, it has a bank of 240v long fouresent tubes hanging all over the place.

Farmers are helped. Yeah right. They work from "can see, to can't see", they on't care what the clock says. Dairy farmers, milk at a particular time. During daylight savings, they still milk at the world time, regardless of what the clock says.

So I'm really not sure exactly how this saves anything. Unless it's the electric chargers on the golf carts at the country club.

Re: I was wondering why we haven't changed the clocks yet.

I have no idea if the change saves energy, but I'm certainly not going to pretend that I know more than the people who implemented this change.

Standard time used to kick in just before Halloween, which was good for us as kids back in the era when it was safe for kids to go out WITHOUT PARENTAL PROTECTION and do the usual trick-or-treat thing. It's weird to think of kids trick-or-treating while it's still light outside. But that's off-topic. Just one of my "I'm an old guy" rants. Please ignore me for your own mental health.

Re: I was wondering why we haven't changed the clocks yet.

Well Pan, this explains a lot about you ~vs~ me - mine is the 20th. What choo getting me?!?
It's hard being a Scorpio - living life and knowing full well that the rest of the world ain't gonna catch up in our lifetimes.
(no offense, rest of the world). Thank goodness the rest of the world has their own brainiacs - 'cause really, I doubt we have a lot of time for this world ... depending, of course, on one's degree of Scorpiousity (I'm a 3rd-degree by my own rules).
I don't really care about the DST - my watch runs on Rez-time anyway. The time is currently around 11:30 or so (pm) Yesterday.
Peace

Wow! My first thought, Izzy, is "Congratulations". I'd offer condolences ... but to whom?
I've had many Virgo friends ... but there's some fire involved.
My wife is a Taurus - my opposite - and the horns of a Bull are about the only things I know that can compete with the sting of the Scorpion.
I smell a party!

Re: I was wondering why we haven't changed the clocks yet.

My ex-inlaws thought they'd be funny and they married on Feb 29th. So I used to buy an aniversary card and cut it up. Each year I'd mail them a chunck and on Leap Year, they could tape it together and read it.

Re: I was wondering why we haven't changed the clocks yet.

Want to hear the kicker Wyody?

My wifes Birthday is the 2nd of Nov. She was born 2 years after me.

I say she is my Eve and I her Adam. There maybe some truth to that as well.. we know all the same people, went to the same parties, and yet we both don't ever meeting before. Was like we were intertwined from the git-go, but it was just not time yet for us to be together, till we did that is.

Yeah I think being a Scopid, is why I see the world in tinted glasses, and I have this attitude about me. heh heh

LOOK I HAVE BIG CLAWS, LOOK AT MY CLAWS, and STAB the tail gets ya. LOL.

Do you have the ability to make copies of your watch, or should I send you a new watch and have you set it to "Rez-time"? Sounds fun! Err... except I don't know what "Rez" means, so maybe I better get more info before I commit to your time zone.

Sorry DT, I forget sometimes that some folks have never lived on the High Desert.
Rez-time means "Reservation Time" and one of the quirks that seem consistent from Rez-to-Rez is, time doesn't mean what it does elsewhere. If somebody says they'll be "right over", go ahead and let dinner finish cooking and eat, maybe take a bit of a nap, go ahead and make your trip to the store ... even if it was your neighbor saying it.
Chances are you know someone who operates the same way ... or maybe you operate that way - in which case it is perfectly acceptable to name the time after that person. For example, if you are that type then, you might say something like "I'll be over at 2:30 ... "Trance-time".
I have a slight problem with it because I'm habitually punctual - but I've learned to accept it from others.

I understand. The NW European and American way of relating to time is different from most other cultures. We're tuned to industrial time rather and we cannot comprehend the ambiguity of other conceptions of time. I had a Brazilian girlfriend who said that the biggest difference she experienced in adapting to US culture was this issue of time, because in Brazil there's a tendency to use a variant of "Rez Time".

Well there are days when he pushes my buttons on purpose...just to get a rise out of me. But he is smart enough to get out of my sight when he has gone too far. I'm a don't plan it, do it person...that drives him nuts...he is one of those that have to change the oil on the car...vaccum it, wash the windows and then we can leave... I grab a kid, get in the car and leave for the weekend at the drop of a hat. No place in mind just go until we find a good place to stop.

But most times we know each others boundries and we work well together as a team. Of course the first 5 years of the 30 we have been together were spent working out the boundries and coming to an understanding

I think that also applies to living in different areas of the U.S. For example I have visited and lived in a couple of places that seen like a different country. Born, raised in CA. Lived in Virginia back in the 70's. Their perception of time was a lot slower pace than CA. Being in a hurry was considered rude

Re: I was wondering why we haven't changed the clocks yet.

Well, Happy Birthday Scorpios! And Happy Anniversary PDX. And same atcha 53 - does that mean you're a Sadge? I guess so or you'd be pumping the Scorpio buttons!
I'd have to say, Pan, that you have bitten off a big chunk there. I've had a couple of Scorpio friends, male and female. I'm surprised the others have let us even live. What a hard life, to deal with a Scorp every day. I've left a couple of spent & mutilated psyches in my wake - luckily, I learned to mellow out quite a bit ... from 2 to 4 in the afternoon!
So, it's time to be both, revealing and honest ... ... nope, no it isn't. The rest can't handle the truth!!

Yeah when we argue it's a site to see. Tails slashing, pincher's Pinching. Venom every where. But the sex afterwards is pay per view stuff. heh heh.. cause you know us Scorpios are the best sex machines on the planet.

Oh me too.. I used to be real easy to anger, and I was always ready to fight.. I have the many scares to prove it.. but I have mellowed quite a bit.. the two teenagers I scared the pee out of 2 nights ago was just for fun, really.. have to tell you that story sometime. lol

And your right they cant handle the truth. heh heh

Some Scorp stuff you may like..

Re: I was wondering why we haven't changed the clocks yet.

Hey, there were a few Scorpio-ish things there I never saw before. Interesting.
Just whose thread did we steal here? Well, it's not really stealing - more like "commandeering" and I think the original question got answered so ...
Some folks don't believe in astrology. Scoff at those who do. Yet, they'll come in line almost perfectly with predicted data.
There's a lot I just really don't question - kinda stupid to go poo-poohing stuff we can't answer or prove.
I think there's something to it ... just don't know what. Cosmic dust? Light of a purple star? Time of year? Season?
All I know is I've seen it play out for real ... or too close to real to poo-poo (not quite the same as s***).
One of my earlier memories was of my adopted ma - sitting at the bowling-alley while my dad bowled in a league. I couldn't quite read yet - but I made out the title on this really thick book she was carrying with her - it said "Raising the Scorpio Child". Poor lady. Shouldda just went and got herself a new child!
Other signs I have seen good consistency in are Virgo, Capricorn, Leo, Taurus ... OH ... and Pisces - for Pete's Sake - Pisces!! Heck, as Scorpios, we walk a very fine line at almost all times. Seems Pisces' are about half-scorpio. It's the "other" half that just blows it all sky-high!
Yet, Scorpios can run the gamut. Case in point: Johnny Carson -vs- Charles Manson - both Scorpios. I'm betting they were two different types.
Well, see ya on the inside track.
