did you see it earlier this month when the Harvest moon was out? Tonight it's nice, was last night also. But earlier this month the Harvest Moon was brilliant.

I rarely see it as orange as it is tonight. My hubby asked a funny question last night. Why is it called a Harvest Moon...Is it so bright that in the old days they could still harvest the fields after dark?

Or is it because it is the season of the harvest?

Guess Hubby was right:)

Thus there is no long period of darkness between sunset and moonrise around the time following these full moons. In times past this feature of these autumn moons was said to help farmers working to bring in their crops (or, in the case of the Hunter's Moon, hunters tracking their prey). They could continue being productive by moonlight even after the sun had set. Hence the name Harvest (or Hunter's) Moon.

It was called the Harvest moon because the first moon in October would rise just as the sun was setting. This would allow another couple hours of light enough so the farmers could see in order work longer into the evening and be able to have time to harvest.

Re: What does your October moon look like. Here is ours.

In Texas our moon has been brilliant white because we don't have smoke or Saharan dust to obscure it.

I spoke with a friend in the North Bay (Sonoma County, CA) this morning and she said they've been having spectacular sunsets the past few days. She asked if it could be related to the fires and I told her that I think that has a lot to do with it. The offshore winds carried a lot of small particulates out over the ocean and much of that could have drifted north over the Pacific, lending to the beautifully hued sunsets that my friend was talking about.
