Some people...

There is one member at some forums that just idealizes and makes everything sound absolutely ridiculous. You may have seen him on city-data. I'm not naming him. This is NOT meant as a personal attack - just wondering, what's your opinion on this guy's ridiculous opinions?
---

First of all, he says that because California jobs "pay so much more" you can easily live there instead of Florida with no difference. I did the numbers for him (pasted from where I said it originally):

Let's say you make $6.50 on your job in Florida, 40 hours a week, the normal 50 weeks a year. You end up with $12,480 gross salary not counting taxes, etc. You'd be very poor btw.

In California, min. wage is $7.50 or so. Let's say you make $8.50 an hour in California. 40 hours, 50 weeks. That's $1360 a month. No, that will not pay the bills AND rent. The extra bucks per hour do not "far exceed" anything! You'd get $16,320 gross in California. About $4k extra a year does NOT exceed the cost of living.

To really live in California, you need at least, LEAST $35k a year, and that's pushing it. That's roughly $2900 a month to live decently in Cali. Sorry but on a typical entry level job, you'd be about $20k short a year.

---

So this guy basically decides you can live in California simply because they have a few bucks higher pay per hour, on average. It's not like everyone in California is paid a six figure salary!

Also, he wants to move to a city called Oil City in PA. It's a depressed little dump in the middle of nowhere but the ridiculous thing is that he wants to spend about $50k and get a 2000 sq ft house, and he expects a safe, non-declining area, with all the modern town amenities. No offense, but some people are INSANE. IMO, $50k will not buy you much anymore and definetly not in a safe, thriving town. Maybe in the middle of nowhere, but nowhere else.

I honestly only care because he's my friend but he's just - not listening - to anything I say. He insists on a $50k mansion in some dump!

Sorry, had to vent. Since this is anonymous, it should be okay. I just wanted opinions on my opinions! I think the guy is a little - a LOT - naive, and I'm way younger!

I remember that guy. He made some really ridiculous posts. He is obsessed with finding a cheap house.

He's obsessed with Oil City and not only that but he's like "It doesn't get that cold, I can heat the house to 60f!" Does this guy live under a rock? I'm 15 and I know more than him.

Good luck in his $50k shack. I hate to say this, but the thing will probably collapse when a snowflake falls on it!

I know of whom you speak

He's cool. He's just figuring stuff out, posting his thoughts, getting feedback. You know how some people say, "Wouldn't it be cool if...?" "Would this work? Why/why not?" That's the vibe I'm getting. Come up with enough ideas and you'll find one/some that work.

And the Antarctica thing, I mean, we all know why people don't live there- it's cold, it's Antarctica- but how many actually stop to think about it? Like, what exactly is it that prevents people from living there? You know, going beyond the simple "it's cold" answer.

He's using what some might call "creativity" and "curiosity". It's a good thing.

The only problem is that it's not the kind of posts people on forums are used to seeing, typically people are writing, "Here's my problem, fix it," kind of posts and it takes a while to realize that's not the angle he's coming from.

Well, I can appreciate the creativity but he is honestly weird. He told me he is a white male with an afro, he wants to go SHIRTLESS in the snow just for the heck of it...sorry, sounds like a bum...

And the whole California cost of living thing, you gotta admit, he really doesn't/didn't know what he was talking about.

Re: Some people...

Also one guy on citycaca (and he's here too but not much) used to CONSTANTLY preach about PA. Everything about PA is "up and coming". Every post the guy wrote was 2 miles long. He could never write a short post. He made some areas of PA sound like heaven and they're rusty declining dumps. He also kept saying how depressed and lonely he was, then turned around and said "Oh, my city is up and coming with gays, etc". What the...? He's a nice guy and we've talked but a little awkward behavior.

Just a quick rant about someone who bothered me, lol

Re: Some people...

LOL I'm glad you guys took this post in good spirit. At city-caca I would've been spazzed at, yelled at for personal attacks, etc.

You guys can actually READ. Most times at citycaca I would say "this is not a (whatever)" and then they'd go and say OMG that's such a ______. Really, really annoying.

And those two members I mentioned were really annoying too, I'm glad they're not regulars here - yet. This is the PERFECT sized community. If I could keep this site as this exact number of members and this level of activity, I'd do it. We're not overloaded and we've got an active forum. We've got most of the best from city-data. We don't need the crap crowd to come in - the crap crowd being the posters on city-data who liked it there but moved here because we will soon have more activity. LOL, don't want those people here since they'll be moaning about the demise of their beloved citycaca.

I know who you are talking about and have chatted with him. He is young and sounds like he has had it pretty easy and doesn't have a grip on reality... but wisdom comes with age. Some just mentally age faster than others but we can't expect more from others just because we know better.

Maybe he is like I am and one of those that just has to find out ourselves and the hard way.

all you can do as his friend is offer the information and let him do what he needs to with it!

Re: Some people...

What's weird is that he would always be like "I hate heat! It's 85f and I'm drenched in sweat". Okay, I really don't think even south Florida is 85 all year long, and he would always say "im gonna turn on the a/c". Why was it NEVER on before he posted?

And I'm not sure you'd really be drenched in sweat every single time it was 85f.

Re: Some people...

Oh and also --> the fact that he NEVER listens to people. Why is it that EVERY time he got advice, he would just shoot it down, ignore it or offer an argument? I don't think he ever just said "Okay thanks". It would always be "LOL No..." or whatever.

Recent post by him (this would seem to be getting mean, and I'm sorry but it's just ridiculous!):
---

Dont worry, I find south Florida a little too warm even in the winter. Its not burning hot, just warm enough that you need air condition! south Ohio winters are mild anyway, if you can tolerate a little cold and dont mind an inch of snow, youll tolerate those winters. I know I will.

I wouldnt move to Florida and you probably already decided against that too. Lots of nice places in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania
----

He thinks south Ohio, PA and WV winters are "mild"? There might be mild pockets but I don't think I would call them "mild"?

And you know how he says he's self employed? Ever seen his website? I don't think his graphics design is going to hold up. No offense, but this is like a 3rd grader's website:

http://www.chooseabstinence.org/

No offense but I don't think anyone is gonna buy grapics, and he refuses to get a real job even when starting out. This guy is gonna be in a cardboard box!

BUMP! I just wanna see what you guys think of that website - for a guy who wants to live on his graphics design!

And sorry I know he was serious but this thing he posted just makes me LAUGH:

Can I safely shower and brush my teeth with Woodsfield water? What if I accidentally drink some? Is there any streams nearby that I can use for my pet fish or even as water to bath in?

"What if I accidentally drink some!?" --> LOL

Re: Some people...

Through proxy, I was just reading some of his old posts wow, he is more weird than I remembered.

Remember when he said he would shower 2x a week at a friend's house? How does he plan to make these friends? It takes several months to make a good friend probably especially in Oil City, and what will he do - not shower til then?

He wanted to trade favors for taking a shower at their house.

He wanted to live with the water turned off in winter.

He wanted to live with a 55-60 degrees heated house...

He wants to spend money on good food but his fave restaraunt is Arby's.

he wants to grow palm trees up north. Granted it can be done, but that's a little counterproductive considering he's leaving Florida.

He was too stupid to realize the picture of the palm trees in snow was from the UK. It had a big co.uk thing in the background -- uh okay?

He told me he wants to run shirtless in the snow.

He wants room for his goldfish, so he wants a 2000 sq foot house. As if a 1200 or so wouldn't hold an aquarium and "collections"?

He's GOTTA be some kind of bum.

Re: Some people...

My landlady/roommate in Canada heated the place to 58 degrees. I was chilly, it was unpleasant to come out of the shower in that temperature, and I put my blanket over my head when I slept because I didn't want to breathe cold air while I was sleeping. I was always waking up with a sore throat because of the cold. It's unpleasant, but it IS survivable.

I tolerate the heat a lot better than the cold, but some people actually LIKE it chilly.

He might have to turn up the heat a little higher than he expects, but he'll be able to keep it below 72, I'm sure.

Do you have an org where you live called Fair Housing? If so, call them and ask what the law is in your county for landlords and heating....also you can go to the library and look up The truth in Renting. 72 is the most normal in most states.

Re: Some people...

Oh great. Now he found some $30k "oceanfront" land in California. He says it's fine and he can build up to 800 sq feet there because the seller said so. Won't they say anything to sell land? And how does he propose to STAY THERE and build for 2 years if all he can afford is land?

Look what he says:
---
You got cheap rent, I would be paying alot more and thats a bad area full of crime. Also I would have to be self employed and get a job to afford rent. I would be too busy to have fun
I will PM you the area where I found those vacent lots. Itll be our "secret" Dont post it here or make it public or they will be all gone!
I want stable land free of floods, mudslides or contamination and not in the desert, too hot and rural!

If I visit CA, I could fly to SF and meet you then if you are interested, we can tour far north CA, perhaps we can both find something we want there
---

If he wants "stable land" isn't he going to be paying more then $30k in Cali? This guy is hilarious. He believes ANYTHING you tell him, and usually the more ridiculous it is, the easier for him to believe!

Doesn't EVERYONE have a job while they're self employed/getting off the ground? You don't go from working and making an income to your own self-sufficient business in a day.

Aw, that was years ago, I don't live there anymore. I talked to her about it, she said if I wanted it warmer I'd have to pay part of the heating bill, and since I was told utilities were included I didn't think it was fair. Even though I could afford it, I decided to put up with the cold for the principal of the thing. I should have talked to her more about it, but I didn't think to at the time.

Actually, SHE wasn't the one that liked it cold, I should have said that it was a friend's roommate that liked it chilly- 52 degrees as I recall! Separate story entirely. My friend REALLY had to bundle up!

No. Some people mooch off relatives. How do you think the creator of vtunnel got where he is today?

And there IS at least one place in California where you can get the beach at a cheap price, don't know if it's the one NAH was talking about: Bombay Beach. Sure, it's an inland beach, but it is a beach. http://www.city-data.com/city/Bombay...alifornia.html

I'm sorry to keep bumping but this is just HILARIOUS. He made a thread like "OMG Alaska is being defrosted! It now gets up to 80's in the summer!"

This guy posts without ANY research. He is naive, and posts in a tone that tries to get excitement out of everyone. Problem is he's so dense and never wants to listen, so nobody cares.

If he had even read ONE page about Alaska he would know the summers have ALWAYS been able to get up to 80.

I hate idiotic people and this guy is definetly one of them.

Also, doesn't anyone have comments on his so-called "site"?

Re: Some people...

I'd have to say I'm not impressed with the site. I'd like to think it's something he slapped together years ago and decided to leave up there, and that he'd be much better at site design and graphics if he were to make a new site today.

At least I'd hope so, if he is planning on making money on websites/graphics design.

Technicals aside, I think it's very "in-your-face". I can appreciate he's chosen a path that suits him, likes it, and wants to promote it as he's happy with his decision, but... "If you think you can't do without sex you need psychiatric help"???? Excuse me, but that's a little insulting. And the part about sex not being required to survive? Well, that may be true, but... you know it's called a sex drive for a reason. Animals are driven to procreate. Those are the ones that pass on their genes, after all. It's not a sex "maybe if that interests you" like riding a roller coaster or buying a dog is.
