Our Pets

Since we seem to have so many pet pictures (although I'm not sure how each of you seem to look like your pets--my avatar is a human ) here's my pets...

The dog is Kuma and he is an American Eskimo. He is now 7. The cat is Socks and she is a grey tabby. She is 4. Both came into our family almost by accident.

We also have two hamsters and a fish. Guess I'll have to take photos of them too...

My avatar is my Alaskan Malamute, Brutus. He also has a "brother" - a boxer named Cassius. This is what they typically like to do - lay around and be bums like my teenagers! But you gotta love 'em...

Re: Our Pets

There probably is not be enough room for photos of all my pets. To begin with, I have the two big horses in my avatar and they are both blind. I also have 7 miniature horses. (two of them were born dwarves and have special needs) I also have 2 cats, 2 parakeets, 1 rooster, 7 hens and a huge koi in our pond that enjoys the company of many sunfish and bass.

Re: Our Pets

Great idea but I don't think it would work. The rooster is busy chasing all the hens around the yard today and the cats would eat the parakeets and the Koi. The mini horses are busy chasing each other around pasture right now. Oh, and the big horses often think their backsides are their best side so they would most likely turn their butts to the camera when I tried to take the picture. I think it would probably take me about a week just to get them all in one place at the same time. I'll have to think of something else I guess.

Re: Our Pets

The chestnut, we think, may be a quarter horse cross. (our farrier says he thinks appendix) The other is an appaloosa. They were both sort of rescues since no one really wants a blind horse. The chestnut was totally blind when we got her and her companion of many years was going blind and has very little sight left. We started out with just one miniature horse but somehow, like potato chips, you just can't have one. At any rate, the big horses are both sweethearts and absolutely amazing. Do you miss your horses?

Do I miss them? Yes and No... I enjoyed having them when my lifestyle was as such that I could enjoy them. I was quite attached to the qtr/appy as he was my baby. It hurt for a long time to be with out them but now I don't have the energy to care for 4 all by myself. I do miss riding.

Oh I want to cry Kuma looks like my Taffy(Samoyed) I had to put her to sleep in June

Wow socks was the name the breeders gave Taffy when she was a baby because she liked to chew socks. She actually never stopped chewing and eating socks.

Enjoy your Kuma give her or him a big hug

That's so sweet!! I love horses I wish I had a house with enough land for horses. I know they would be a lot of work though.

Christmas Day, 1988. I'd just rescued a fawn who stepped off of the frozen path and was buried in snow as the Doe stood there helpless. Their hooves are razor sharp but had to try before the dogs showed up (Great Dane, two Shepherds). Got the fawn on the path and looked up the mountain and saw no sign of my dozen horses. Plowed (with my feet and torso) through chest-deep snow up and over the mountain to find they'd broken through a fence - had to plow back down to the house to get my tools and plow back, chase-down and halter the lead-horse to haul him home first so the others would follow. Got them down and had to plow back up to fix the fence.

I'll settle for the wife's cat.

Yeah and that is why now I only have a cat...Although, he can be as much of a challenge as my 4 horses, 2 dogs, 1 cat, 1 bird and some fish were at one time! But he is my baby!!!

They are a lot of work. I would not want to have to take care of horses if I were still employed. But my hubby and I both retired at a young age and the horses are a wonderful reason to get up and get moving early in the morning. I enjoy hearing them all nickering hello and asking for their breakfast. Life is good.

Dang if it wasn't a pretty-much normal day!! If it wasn't the horses breaking thru the barbed-wire and getting cut, it was the going out with the axe to chop thru the ice in the water-trough twice a day in winter. I much preferred raising mules - smarter animal (or animule) and much more sure-footed for the mountains.
I tell ya, in those days, if it wasn't the horses (quarter-horses), it was the dogs. If it wasn't the roving dogs, it was the coyotes. If it wasn't the coyotes, it was the Bull Moose who kept breaking into the grainery. If it wasn't the moose, it was the raccoons chewing thru the mink-wire to get into the chickens and ducks.
There sure is a lot to having a place in the country!

And some people actually think living in the country is boring! Geeesh!

(There is one thing I won't do and that is chop ice. We use electric water buckets and heated stock tanks)

Re: Our Pets

My Black Kitty died. I just found her this morning. She is our outdoor kitty because she doesn't like the kids. She sleeps in the garage and hangs out with us when we are outside.

I'm not sure what she died of. It may have been the automatic garage door. She was always jumping on it as it rolled up or down. She liked hanging out in the rafters in the garage. Or it could have been a car. I found her in the corner of the garage.

She was about 14 years old. She found us when she about 9 years old. She had lived through a flood about 6 years ago and adopted the family that lived in our last home. When they moved they left her behind and she adopted us. When we moved to Valley Springs we took her with us. We live on a semi busy country road. She was so use to being outdoors you couldn't make her an indoor cat. She would come in and hang out until we got the kids. Then they are just too noisy for her and she stayed in the garage or outside. She was hit by a car once before. About a year ago and made it through that with a half moon scar on her face.

I can't bring myself to move her. My husband will bury her tonight on our property.

Re: Our Pets

I am sooo sorry Izzy.. My heart breaks for you. You gave her a good home for the years she was with you I am sure.

================================

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Re: Our Pets

Thank you MyAzi. I hope she is in that beautiful place. I just wish she had liked being indoors. She would have been safer. Our other kitty has never been outside. She is fine with the kids and staying in. She came into our garage at six weeks lost and eating our black kitty's food. She has been indoors since she was six weeks old. She is tucked under my feet right now.

Thanks again.

izzy,

My heart goes out to you! This is for you >O< <O> >O< ;...

That was an electronic hug and a cry. The best I can do without being there.

Dang those pets who come into our lives and invade our hearts and souls, dang those cats who pretend they only love you when they feel like it. Dang those cats who really know that they love us all the time. Dang them for leaving too soon. Dang them all, but dang, we sure love them like we owned them, but really, do they not own us?
