Why don't each of us type in what we think would be the best keywords for search engines and post them. I know NOTHING about making a site hit...but this is how I found city data.

Idaho forum real estate info
New Mexico real estate info
Moving to Idaho
Idaho Weather

New words I can think of Mormons, LDS, Northern Idaho kkk, CA real estate prices sky rocket, Moving out of CA, Where are ca residents moving to, real estate market in Boise, Inversion weather.

Get the idea. All the stuff I read over and over in city data.

But it should be done so it is useful info. Just posting metadata to get hits is lame. That is why we just need to keep posting in the state forums and we will get noticed. Just start posting anything and everything. Favorite place to go, favorite park, favorite museum, favorite anything. Also giving reviews of local places will get noticed.

Ideas are not stupid.
I found c-d by browsing for "Where to live in Oregon".
Seems the words "living in" or "moving to" or "where to move in ..." work as well.
My usual browse is for town newspapers, i.e., "SLC newspapers".
I like the idea PDXNative presents - just make good posts concerning an area, be active on the state forums, etc. Admin suggests spelling out the state name rather than the common abbrev.

Your on the right track (I like you pooch avitar BTW).

What we need to do is get into our states and talk about these keywords. What that will do is add to the value not to mention the threads in the states, visitors will read the posts and will hopefully join, the spiders will pick it up and search engines will give the same result as you proposed (it will just take longer, but good things happen when you do it good.

I favor the "as we build content, our rank/keywords will naturally increase" approach. It seems much more honest to me.

Yes, but when I logged on yesterday someone was talking about keywords we should use such as sailing or sail. That is also calculated and pre determined. Is it still honest....why are we even tweaking what we are doing...why not just let it happen naturally...I'm not the one who brought up the subject. I just brain stormed on what was presented.:)

I was being honest about what I was trying to accomplish...completely honest:)

You soft-point is well stated and I'd like to address the question you present about "tweaking".
Some of us are here (imo) because we came here looking for information on moving and decided to stay and spill our knowledge of areas to help others who are contemplating a move.
If there is somebody out there wanting to move to where I currently live (for the next 6 days) - then, I know there are people and sites online with certain types of information. I want to be able to help the potential mover find them BUT I have some information and viewpoints that I don't think they'll get anywhere else but from me ... and so, I want to be on their list of advisors!
To do that, I will tweak to better facilitate their chances to find me and my opinion. I can't give them all the percentages or numbers that some folks can - but I can tell them how much a loaf of bread costs here and what people-types hang at which bar or church or club or how the snow is up the mountain or little things they'll have to do to winterize, where to go for supplies - little things that they may not have yet considered.
So, imo, tweaking to pull them in here is as honest as belonging here.

Exactly. You're being honest about what you are doing. As I was. But a few post on this thread mention "honesty" and "post anything and everything"...make up your minds folks, are you posting to draw people here or are you posting a subject/ question that you really, honestly want answered?:)

Like I said, you were on the right track. One thing we can find out is whether the spiders will pick up on the tags that you can add when you start a new thread. If this is the case, then we all should do tags when we start a new thread. This would end up doing exactly what you suggested.

One thing that concerned me when I came in, was that most of us who were at City-Data were there to answer questions that people posed, but there were no other people here except for mostly banned members. When I first got here there were like 39 states with no posts but an active "other topic" area. I kept checking in, waiting for questions about washington. D'oh! It finally dawned on me that you must build it, then they will come. (where have I heard that before).

I realized that what I needed to do was create a baseline of information about washington so that a guest or new member would see there was information there, and it would encourage them to ask followup questions. Within those posts are the keywords that will get us up high in the search engines. It just takes time and a lot of dedication.

Time we have, and with members like you, we have the dedication.

Haven't noticed the tag thing. Thanks for mentioning it. I will look for it in the future. Also I will spell out the state as someone suggested. I will start posting info. in my area. Such as local events and concerns.

For some reason I thought you meant make "keyword posts" (a list of catch phrases with little actual content) in the state forums, not list keywords here so that one knows how to "tweak" informative posts to be easier to find...
