I've often wondered how far Indian law goes. While they appear to be given the right to choose their destinies, it only applies if you stay on the reservation, and certain state and federal laws still apply. After all, I hardly think the federal government would allow the reservation to build bombs or plot against the president. And we know that their land is really still part of the United States since you don't see open holes in maps where the reservations lie.

If you kill a person on the reservation, I assume that Indian law applies. But if you want to open a casino, that's a big no no. You have to apply with the state and they need to be given their blood money. The Mohegan Sun Casino here in CT was a very interesting controversy. I understand that the "owners", or at least the person or persons who originally applied to build this place, were only at most 1/16 Indian. Does that really count?

yeah in CA it does. If you have a drop of Native American Blood you are Native American... Byt the way Pro... Indian is no longer policitally correct. I know because our school mascot was Indians in the midst of Indian Reservations...and someone (probably from the ACLU) was offended by the term and they wanted to change the name recently to Native Americans...

Anyway... I don't know much about the laws on the reservations but I remember as a teen we partied on them all the time and the city cops would wait down the streets leading out and try to arrest the teens as we left... just slightly intoxicated.

My high school mascot in MN was the Mohawks with an Indian head logo very similar to the Chicago Blackhawks NHL team, but the school was forced to change it the year after I left. They changed it to a bird and called themselves the White Hawks the next year and ever since.
