Why are people moving out?

If New England is such a great place to live, then how come it's the slowest growing area in America? Of course we already have the population so it's not like we really need any more people, but really why aren't we growing? No land left perhaps? People tired of cold winters?

Maybe I'll eventually get tired of the area, but it's going to take awhile. I might end up with two homes: One here and one in Arizona...

From what I can see the taxes in that area are getting so high. But I don't know for sure. It sure is a beautiful area!

Re: Why are people moving out?

I've lived in 38 states. My job forced me to. I've traveled in almost all of the states including Alaska and Hawaii. I've worked out of New York, I've worked out of New Port Rhode Island.

But Connecticut is one place I've never been. Flew over it, sailed past it on the ocean. But I've never stepped foot in it or seen it.

What's it like? I've heard that it's beautiful but other then people telling me that, I would like to know. What makes it appealing?

Mane, Connecticut, and Mass are the three states I haven't visited. All the rest, I've been in. And no, I'm not a truck driver. haha

Re: Why are people moving out?

"Seventy-three percent of those surveyed said their new house was more spacious than their former Massachusetts digs, and 54 percent indicated they enjoy a higher standard of living. Half of respondents said housing costs were a major factor in their departure." according to the Boston Globe, which reports that Massachusetts and New England population grew only 0.1% last year.

An AP report says "New England's population growth has long trailed the nation's as more people have headed toward the Southwest and other regions offering sunnier climates, lower living costs and more plentiful jobs." and projects NH and ME will continue to lead growth in New England, although it'll be at about half the national rate, with MA and CT projected to have near zero population growth.

The biggest drop in New England is in the 19-24 age group, which are highly mobile. A study suggests the major reason is those who attend college elsewhere are likely to settle outside of New England, especially in areas with higher job growth and lower unemployment. But lower housing costs were not a reason. If this is the case, then New England's high proportion of high tuition private colleges (and low proportion of public universities with modest tuition) is a leading cause of emigration!

Really, CT is not much different than Rhode Island except that we don't have crazy accents like they do there. I don't think a lot of people know this but you can't understand many of the natives in RI. I was there right after the Pats won their second superbowl and this guy said, with his absolute worst (or best) RI accent: "I thought it was goin' to be Bill Buckna all ova ag'in!"

What is really weird is that CT does not have much in the way of accents. The only thing I figure is that since we are halfway between New York and Boston, both of which are known for having their own unique accents, they must CANCEL EACH OTHER OUT IN CT!!!
