Seems like there's not many Wal-Marts in New England compared to other areas. Is that because
My business is in Vernon and they did a great job keeping Wal-Mart out. I know many of you may like Wal-Mart--low prices and all--but I like small businesses and I think a lot of New Englanders do too. Pay the small town guy so the money stays local.

We don't have that many here in WA either... Or places like Best Buy and Circuit City...whereas in CA they were across town from each other. I wonder why that is.

Around here, the small town guys charge 2-3 times as much for the exact same lowcost chinaware, own enormous houses, drive expensive new cars, and often send their kids to private schools. They also own local politics, and use it to enhance their wealth. Walmart also pays into the local economy - the jobs may not be much but at least they pay for SOME bennies ..... unlike the small store owners, who also pay around minimum wage.

I know that the Walton family happens to be one of the richest families in the world with assets in excess of $100,000,000,000. Yeah, $100 Billion. Where is "around here"? I'm not saying Wal-Mart is horrible. They aren't great but yes, they do provide some employment. They sure have a tremendous turnover rate. I know most companies do nowadays but I swear theirs is accelerated since they demand more than minimal competence--just like my company. I just don't care for their tactics. They are driving out true Americana. Like I said, few places are unique anymore because everything has gone national. Look around, it seems like the majority of major stores are everywhere. They treat their vendors like garbage: use them and abuse them, they quickly take over every new town and community they can, they make every employee into a slave, etc. I know, I used to work there. Anyway... Didn't mean to turn this into a Wal-Mart conversation since it was really meant to be a CT thread.

"Here" is northern California, and the local harware store and the local grocery store do charge 2 or more times the amount for hardware and canned goods. I can't swear the owners are getting all their money from the one store though, maybe they're trust funders or something. And I've talked to the workers, minimum wage and no bennies.

I found New England has a large mix with Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Kohl's, Macy's, Costco, Sams Club, BJ's, Bob's Store, Dick's Sporting goods, The Bon, Sears, K-mart, JC Penny, Fileenes, Circut City, Petco, Lowes, Home Depot, and many many more. These are all in Manchester NH or within 20 mins of. And comming soon CABELAS. We don't need walmart we have real stores and compatition. That keeps prices down. And unlike walmart the other stores actually have good quality stuff for the most part.

Now local pizza and restaurants ..... THAT I like, much better than the chains. Yeah, Round Table and Subway taste good enough, but there's something special about the crazy variety of foods and even a little inconsistency that I found in Massachusetts and upstate NY. Pizza with the sauce on top and the cheese on the bottom in one place, there was one sub place in Pittsfield MA that used to make killer eggplant parmesan subs prepared starting the evening before, and really well-stuffed Italian coldcut subs too. You can tell the difference between a chain sub and local often by the onions, which are powerful in most locally owned places but bland in the chains. Greek restaurants, Armenian, Jewish bagels and delis, anything except good Mexican. But especially good Italian in the NE.
