Considering moving to Delaware or near...?

What can anyone tell me about living near Wilmington, DE? My spouse and I are considering moving there for his work. What is the cost of living and where is a nice place? Is Newark, DE ok?

You definitely want to live near Wilmington not in it. Crime in the city is pretty bad.

There are a lot of great suburban areas north of Wilmington, but stay on the west side of 95. A few parts of the side east of 95 can be a little dicey.

West of Wilmington, Newark (prounounced New Ark, not like the one in Jersey) is primarily a college town. But Newark's suburbs are pretty nice. The area northwest of the city like Greenville and Hockessin are extremely nice and semi-rural, but extremely expensive.

South of town, with the exception of New Castle and the area right around it, most of that area is okay and the further south you go, the more rural it becomes. You can drive from the Canal to Wilmington in about a half hour.

As for the cost of living, Delaware has no sales tax and a very low property tax due to the fact that it is the legal home for a great number of America's corporations. I'd say the cost of living is about average.

If you decide to live just across the line in Pennsylvania or New Jersery (Wilmington is about 10 miles from PA and NJ), remember you'll have to deal with two states income taxes and in Pennsylvania most likely a local income tax as well.
