Holiday Time in Delaware

From the very northern boundary of the State of Delaware, south to the Delaware beaches, Delaware welcomes you! Since Delaware is approximately 97 miles long, this would make a great day (or 2) trip, and if you haven't been to Delaware lately, you are in for a wonderful surprise! What better time, than the holiday season, to explore our small wonder!

A suggestion would be, starting with Longwood Garden's beautiful floral and tree display, holiday music, ice skating and planned events. Located just north of the Delaware boundary in Pennsylvania, I know...but, a great place to start your Delaware trip south.

Traveling south on Route 13 (skip Route 1, the generic route) you'll see Willey Farms (Market) near Townsend, and you'll be pleased to find fresh produce in abundance, gifts, trees, decorations, and even a whole foods section. http://www.willeyfarmsde.com/story

By now, you should be in the holiday spirit. Heading south, the Town of Smyrna has a beautiful historic section, and Smyrna is the home of their newly renovated Smyrna Opera House. http://www.smyrnaoperahouse.org/

Another 8-9 miles south, you will find the the Capital of the State, Dover. They are planning a superb "Home for the Holidays" event on December 6th, 2008. Here's that web site (pdf file): http://www.cityofdover.com/media/doc...e%20111108.pdf
"Home for the Holidays" is a first this year, sponsored by downtown merchants. It looks to be shaping up beautifully! Also in Dover, you will find walking tours of the historic area, which includes visiting stately old buildings, and hearing stories told by the tour guides. The Schwartz Center for the Arts, is a Must See! http://www.schwartzcenter.com/ See "Scrooge" December 18th or 19th! Lodging is in abundance in Dover, from the Dover Downs Hotel, to many fine hotels/motels in and around the City.

For those liking farm markets (I guess the trendy name is 'flea markets') there is Spence's Bazaar, a farmer's market over 75 years in existence, and located in the City of Dover. Open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, you will find an Amish food market, outside tables rented by local farmers and vendors selling garden produce, knick-knacks, antiques and good junk! There is also a snack bar (great breakfasts) and an auction during the evening. To find out more about Dover, and Spence's Bazaar, walk to the barber shop at the west end of the Spence's Bazaar barn, and you will leave there looking good, and all the wiser!

Needless to say, traveling farther south through Delaware, there are more surprises.....The City of Milford is decorated beautifully, as well as Milton, Lewes, Rehoboth (not Rehobeth), Dewey Beach, and Bethany Beach. Be sure to check out southern Delaware events, and don't miss the Sea Witch Festival!
Ask away, if you have questions. I am not affiliated with any of these businesses or places, just am very proud of my home state - - - Delaware!
