the latter, and the locals are very particular about it. I went to university there and my hubby is from around there. New-Ark, two distinct syllables.
BTW, did you know that Edgar Allen Poe cursed the town? There are a couple of stories you can search on the web, but one is a more 'clean' version. Seems he was staying at an inn where the Deer Park Tavern currently is (which is why its logo is a raven), but was evicted for being drunk and not paying his bill. I believe he landed in the mud. He was so unhappy that he cursed the town that "all who lived there would someday return!" It works, I lived there for 4 years and I've been back a number of times.
