| I hate Wilmington, DE
Is the only purpose of this town to create, print and send useless junk mail? Most of the junk arriving in my mailbox every day seems to come from Wilmington, Delaware. It all goes directly in the paper shredder.

| Re: I hate Wilmington, DE Could be wrong but I think Delaware was traditionally the place to set up a corporation since the laws were favorable. So there are still lot of credit card companies whose headquarters are listed with a Delaware address. Not particular inconvenient either since Wilmington is on the edge of the Philadelphia Metro area.

I never noticed where my junk mail comes from... I just toss it in the burn pile or shred pile. The credit card stuff I burn because I saw that special on 20/20 that the guy shredded his cc app and then taped it back together and they still sent him a cc...He even blacked out the printed add and used another..and they still sent the card. Scary stuff...

It's the mid-atlantic's answer to 'tax free shopping' since there is no sales tax in DE. Unfortunately northern DE has succumbed to it's neighbors and has develooped a terrilbe case of urban sprawl and severe over-development. | |

Totally right, Wannacomehome. There is practically no empty land left in Northern DE. Seriously. You can drive down a street and see almost nothing but homes and stores anymore. I don't mean to act like it's shocking, but it sure is sprawl. The land that's still just land is usually either nasty, or has been purchased and is just sitting there, or has been purchased and is being developed. The only thing DE has going for it is the relatively -- and I definetly mean RELATIVELY -- mild climate, and the low taxes. Then again, streetlights are kind of scarce -- just one example of our payback for the low taxes. It's way too developed here, and it's getting too crowded. Crime is bad in Wilmington itself. In the suburbs, it's quite a lot lower. There are some nice zip codes w/ Wilmington adresses. But I still wouldn't encourage you to move here. Home prices are skyrocketing, and IMO, this area has nothing fun to do worth moving here. Even the last few nearby minigolfs were torn down/closed lately, as well as the dinky little "waterpark" with two waterslides (but hey it was the closest thing) being gone. Those were in nearby PA, but it's still the general area going downhill. Southern DE is a little nicer, a little more open, a little less developed. It's also slightly warmer. They tend to get mix/rain when northern DE gets snow. The beaches are cute. Southern DE is expensive though--home prices much higher. Low taxes though, I'm guessing unless you're on the beach anyway. Overall though, I see no reason to move here. Okay, the climate is decently mild. We usually only get one or two major snowstorms and a few extra dustings/1" showers. It's fairly warm from April to late September. It can get really cold but the snaps don't last that long. Right now it's pretty cold but it's just a few days of a snap, then it'll be back into the 30's-40's which isn't horrible for February. My advice? Despite the issues there, I'd pick NJ over DE. There's more to do, and although there are (much) higher taxes, it'd be worth it to me. For cheap real estate you better go to upstate PA. That's the closet affordable area. Sorry to go so off topic, I just got wrapped up talking about my state! |

| Re: I hate Wilmington, DE Well, lower NJ (sometimes called the Pine Barrens) is actually nice; You wouldn't think it was the same state. But central, main NJ is often called the armpit of the nation! Some of the grassy medians actually have signs saying they've been sprayed with noxious chemicals, and boy can you smell it! I'ts just nasty. Do you remember the old song 'Pollution'? it was written about NJ. and now it's all been flowin down to northern DE.
