Thinking about moving to the DC area & want to know if it is better to...

...look for housing in MD, VA or DC.? I need some info from those in the know. Overall, considering costs of housing, taxes, quality of schools, commute time, safety etc. Which areas are best to be looking at?

I have lived in northern Viginia for over 30 years. We had a choice between D.C. MD and VA and picked VA because of the public schools - a valid reason to this day. 2 questions are germane - how much can you afford for housing and how much of a daily commute to/from work can you endure? Housing close to the beltway (I 495)is extremely expensive. Many commute daily more than an hour each way to live in a home they can afford. Taxes - D.C. is highest in property, income and sales taxes. With school age children I would pick VA. A well paid bachelor would do best in D.C.

I would guess that DC would be the most $$$. It depends where in Maryland and Virginia... it's a pretty expensive area!

I was wondering the same thing...if you can afford it D.C. is nice , otherwise I have been told good things about VA.
