Kid Nation

Hey, any body been watching Kid Nation on CBS?

I guess it was pretty controversial prior to the start, not sure how it's being preceived now, but was wondering if anybody has watched...

I work with kids and it has been interesting to see these kids interact. Kinda sad that they are 30 days into the show and there is a bunch of kids who have basically been ignored by the editors.

Re: Kid Nation

I have watched every episode so far. It has been a slightly interesting. I did notice that some kids seem to be ignored. I have found myself wondering "Who is this kid?" more than once in the last couple episodes when some previously unknown kid is sudddenly getting camera time. I was laughing during one of the last episodes when the fat girl kept eating the pies that they were supposed to be moving during the challenge.

This recut Kid Nation video is kinda funny.

40 kids left "alone*" for 40? days in an "abandoned**" town in New Mexico. They are divided into 4 groups and do challenges every few days to determine jobs, class, and pay between Upper Class, Merchants, Cooks, and Laborers. They also have an elected town council of 4 people that chooses between 2 different rewards for the town if the complete their challenges in a certain amount of time. The rewards they need to choose between are usually something they need versus something they want, or something that will give immediate satisfaction versus something that will be good for them all in the long run. Tonight it was a Library versus a Video Arcade. In the past it has been something like fruits and vegatables versus go-carts.

*They were not really alone with adult cameramen, producers, a medic, and a child psychologist all off camera

**It was an actual abandoned town at one point, but has been rebuilt as a movie set for Legend of the Lone Ranger, Silverado, and Lucky Luke. http://www.bonanzacreekranch.com/

Interesting.. and what is the purpose of this? Is it too prove kids are smarter than we give them credit for? Is it to prove kids are not as smart as they think they are? Or some other purpose.. like entertainment.

Re: Kid Nation

Pan, I'm going to open up with you. I don't often do this. Kids are smart, kind of dumb when you think of it. When they try, their really smart. They can come up with things that you and I try to hold back on. We do what we can to keep from tripping over ourselves in front of them. But you know what? We're human. We're going to trip up. And it's funny. Years later, we'll laugh about it. May not think it's funny when we do it, but it will be funny years later. Kids are human. They are intelegent. They are smarter then what we give them credit for. Hell, I've learned more from my kids then I have from books.

I've even learned more from my son who just got back from Iraq. He can't spell for ****. He's emails were hard to read. But that boy has more smarts then ma has kettles. Give that boy a rifle and he'll clear it, load it and not think anything of it.

I would say mostly for entertainment since it is really just another reality show. Some of the kids are smart though. One kid burned the town name and year into pieces of scrap wood with a magnifying glass then stuck a strip of leather through them and sold them as souvenir necklaces. He became the richest person in town by doing that even though he was not one of the assigned "upper class". Kids were buying them for themeselves and extras for relatives.
