THE VILLAGES - What about it?

I have some friends who are asking me about "The Villages" as they have gotten mailers or something advertising homes for $79,000.
They know that it's a golfing community (they don't golf) with heated pools (they need heated pools) but they know little else.
Anybody got the scoop? This sounds awfully cheap even for Florida of the 1970's!
What's up with "The Villages"? What is it? What are these cheap homes? What's the good ... the bad ... and the screaming ugly?

It's interesting that you should mention this, Odie...my hubby and I were talking about our long-term plans (20 years or so) and The Villages seem to be a very viable option. From what I've gathered, there are numerous activities...something for everyone...and it's like a little city of it's own. I've heard that everyone rides golf carts in the immediate area...what a great idea.

I checked on some of the housing in that area...as I was curious, also...and didn't find anything for as low as the $80's, but the market was very comparable to this area...you can purchase a nice house with garage, yard a few extras...nothing fancy, but nice, for around $125,000 to about $150,000.
I always thought that a retirement community with lots of amenities and activities would be a great way to grow old. Haven't really heard of any negatives at this point in time.
