| Goodbye Florida
I have decided that Florida is another place that is just not for me. Judging by the large number of moving trucks that I see traveling north on I-95, it seems that I am not alone. Time to decide on a new destination and prepare for another move. |

Hey TS we can both move to Galveston TX. =) I am also looking into Seattle or there abouts. I was just invited to check out the South Carolina Coast.. never been there.. but that could be an option too.

Well, after living in both Charlotte and Jacksonville, as well as visiting multiple other southeast cities, I think I am ruling out Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virgina. I am looking for lower crime rates, higher pay rates, and cheaper housing than Florida. Maybe around a 15-30 minute drive outside a major city in an area that is not ruled by homeowners' associations. Quote:
I have considered Texas a little, but I am afraid of it being something like a cross between North Carolina and Florida. Seattle is also a consideration, but the cost of living there seems high, I might have to research it more though. I don't think I will even consider South Carolina at this point.

| Re: Goodbye Florida I don't personally think that there are any similarities between Texas and Florida whatsoever ... except that some parts are flat and if you work at it, you can find water. Texas is Texas. They think they're the West. I don't know what that would make those of us out here west of Texas ... in the real West. However, I'm more clued in on areas south of Jacksonville ... and Tampa .... and Orlando ... and Lauderdale ... and Miami. From the mention of the last two areas you've tried, it sounds like you need a Michigan that's just a little farther south. You mentioned the "Big City" thing - although you called OKC a big city and I wouldn't go quite 100% that far but it sounds like you need a metropolitan base. You've ruled out the south - but must still want heat - with relief. I'm thinking Sacramento in the west; Indianapolis in the east. Grand Rapids in the north (MI) and Cedar Rapids if you're up for a shot-in-the-dark. I know most of those aren't quite metropolitan ... but you already know a lot about those metropolitan places, I'll bet. (pssssst ... never rule out Owensboro, Y'all)

The Sacramento area is still too crazy high for real estate. The other areas that you mentioned could be options. I might eventually end up back in the Minneapolis area where I am originally from, but I feel like I should maybe try atleast one more place while I am still young before just going back there.

| Re: Goodbye Florida I lived in Charlotte and did not like it. It was too "southern?" for me and had a high crime rate that spread far from downtown. Living 12 miles out of downtown Charlotte I was still surrounded by crime and did not feel safe, 12 miles outside of downtown Minneapolis in any direction is low crime, usually around half of the national average or less and the Minneapolis metro area is twice as big at 3.5 million vs 1.7 million. The local grocery store in Charlotte had a guy with a gun guarding the door. I don't yet have kids, but might someday and neither Charlotte nor Jacksonville has many public schools that I would consider acceptable.

| Re: Goodbye Florida I like it, it's nice, nice beaches, lots of entertainment. The weather is great. We live in Carolina Forest, it's really it's own area and has everything. It has good schools. plenty of shopping and only 5 miles from the beach. The new Hard Rock Park is opening this Spring. You may also want to look into Calabash NC, it's about 10 miles N of N Myrtle Beach and about a half hour from Wilmington NC. |

| TEXAS ***** ADVISOR | Re: Goodbye Florida My Brother lives in Seattle, I lived there for a brief time.. its not that bad. It is something you have to get used too though. The cost of living seems high when you look at rents and so forth, but when you also look at pay scales its pretty much on par with the rest of the country. As a Security Guard they start you at 11-12 bucks an hour.. Hamburger joints also pay well from 9 bucks up.. so when you take that into consideration its not that bad. I have found 1-3 bedroom houses for as low as 795 a month.. so do some research.. its not all that bad really.
