Considering moving to tampa, fl from las vegas, nv?

My sister's tell me its a bad idea because of all the hurricanes.
They say that I will have to go to shelters all the time, and my house will get destroyed.

Seldom do hurricanes hit the Tampa area. Also, Tampa is not on the coast. It's in land a ways, however, the bay can cause trouble for you if you live close to it.

It's not that bad if you are careful about where you pick to live there. I lived about a mile from Bush Gardens and I was 400 ft above the elevation of the bay so tidal waves would not effect me. Winds hit a couple times but tipped over trash cans and a couple of carports were all the damage that happened. Oh, and a couple trees uprooted.

But Tampa is situated in kind of a hard place for hurricanes to bend into. Most of them that hit on the West Coast hit further North, up by Old Town to Pensacola.

The reason it's better protected is because of the taper of the bottom of the gulf. When you head out of Tampa on a boat, you can be 30 miles out in the gulf and the water is only 80 ft deep. Because it's so shallow for so far out, tidal waves are really rare. It's winds and tornado's that you have to worry about so if you find a place that is well protected by large, mature trees and up a ways in elevation. You'll be fine.

It sounds to me like he is talking about "what she was told" since he mentions hurricanes not hitting Tampa often.
