Florida Tornado Sirens

I was watching news about the recent tornadoes in Florida and was surprised to hear that tornado sirens are rare in Florida. Is this true? If so, I wonder why. In Minnesota they were all over, and usually tested monthly. I have not really looked for them here in North Carolina.

Re: Florida Tornado Sirens

That is very true. There are none that I know of.

Think about this. In most US cities, those weren't tornado sirens. They were originally air raid sirens installed during the cuban missile crises. When that went away, they had to use them for something and decided to use them for impending disaster.

But unfortunately there are none in Florida. Or at least that's what was reported on CNN today.

But I don't know if they would have helped much. Tornado's hit after 3am and I doubt many people would have heard them in that rural community.

Not that you may be any safer in a house but I don't understand why they allow trailers in places like this.

I just heard on the news that there is radio device that one can buy that alerts you if there is a tornado in the area. It also comes with this vibrating device that you put under your pillow for sound sleepers. They said its about $250 for that one they where demonstrating but wally-world had a more less costly one.

You say, you don't understand why "They" allow "Trailers"? First off, who's they? Who is going to tell me what I can and can't live in? Every state in the Union has had tornado's. Some states more then others. A siren is nice and gives you a chance to head for the basement. However, because of shifting sands, there's not a lot of basements in Florida. Least, not like other areas.

Last night, there was more standard homes destroyed then there were trailers. The news just shoots more film of the trailer parks because they are more scattered and make for more sensationalism on the news.

They being the same people that said you need to strap on seat belts when driving. Your right though houses got hit just as hard. All I seen on the news where trailer parks. I can see what you are saying about the media though.

I got a kick out of one news caster. He said that it was a terrible thing, he couldn't figure why people didn't listen. They announced the tornado on the radio.

No how many people do you think were listening to the radio at 3 in the morning?

Yeah, the media likes to show the biggest bang for the buck.

Maybe it's time that they put in sirens. Where I grew up (Small town in South Dakota) they had a siren and it was lit off every day at noon.

I agree! People get on me for my stance against the media but as you can see there all for those ratings or there personal agendas. Its sad but true most States act after the matter. Maybe now you will start seeing some sirens.

While you can say that everyone should have the right to do whatever they want: I don't particularly like having to foot the bill for every fool out there who wants to live in the path of a hurricane, live in tornado alley, live in a flood prone area, or live in an earthquake zone.

Plus, I'm sure there are plenty of property owners who don't like the idea of having someone else's trailer as a permanent addition to their roofline. Guess that's why we become overregulated because people say, "There ought to be a law!" So the next thing you know, the law says if you own a trailer it must be strapped to the ground using heavy duty metal straps.

Like you say about the news they love sensationalism. You can also say that they love to stir the emotions. You know damn well they love to put up the moron who says, "Yeah, I know my house was destroyed by the flood, but dag nabbit, I'm going to put that house right back up next to the river." Meanwhile this same property owner has had this house destroyed five times already.

What about Nawlins? Why do they continue to build there!!!! There is no earthly reason to continue rebuilding that city to a tune of 100's of billions of dollars! You know it's going to cost 100 times this and it's going to break the US budget! Sheesh, build up stream at Baton Rouge and call that the New New Orleans.

Do what you want to do but KEEP ME OUT OF IT. Unfortunately, it's becoming harder and harder to do that. We are too dependent on each other in one way or another.

Oh I fully agree with you. Trailers belong in duly authorized trailer/rv parks. As a land owner, I don't want somebody moving a trailer in next door. I understand. But if I want to live in a trailer, I will. There's nobody going to tell me I can't. But like mentioned, I'm going to put it where it belongs. Us trailer trash have to congregate together. We can all line up for a family picture so that between all of us, we'll have a full set of teeth.

I don't live in a trailer. I do have to say not all people that live in trailers are trailer trash. There are some beautiful trailers that look better than some conventional houses.
Down here in Punta Gorda all the new trailers ARE STRAPPED to the ground.
This started after Hurricane Charley blew most of the old ones away.

We were looking at property up in Pa. and one listing stated "new double wides or trailers". When we got to the area, there were trailers among the regular conventional built homes. I too, wouldn't want to live next door to a trailer in poor shape, but if it was the newer kind that was taken care of and had nice landscaping, I don't think I would mind too much!

Re: Florida Tornado Sirens

BTW, maybe they didn't have sirens in Florida because they use to say that tornados aren't strong here. I heard that on the news a few years ago.
The weatherman said we don't get strong tornados. Think again!

I'd be listening and dressed and ready to go. We had a tornado watch in Charlotte a few weeks ago till 3am. I was dressed and ready to go somewhere

You know, ProEye, obviously I don't agree with you on many things, but I think you are 150% correct on this one. I wish more people would grow a brain and realize that it's really foolish to rebuild New Orleans, especially since Louisiana is steadily sinking.

I'm like you. A few years ago I was in Charleston living in my RV and I was on the beach. A hurrican was coming toward us. So I hooked onto my 5th wheel got everything ready to pull and went back in and watched the TV. I watched until about 1am. The hurricane finally turned and headed North. I went to bed. When I got up at 5am I opened the door and looked around. The RV park was empty. I was the only one there. I turned on the TV and the hurrican had only went north for about 30 minutes and now it was baring down on us again. It was right at the point of tropical or hurricane. My daughter said, Dad, what are we going to do? I said, well, the roads are plugged, we'll just set right here. She said, "But dad, the winds are 75 mph." I said, Bobbi, we pull it down the road at 75 and it hasn't flown apart yet. hahahaha Luckily the storm diminished even more and we got hit with 60mph winds. No damage, we were fine.

I thought I had all bases covered and then it turned on me. haha But luckily it wasn't a cat 3 or 4 storm. We'd have been screwed.

Re: Florida Tornado Sirens

I also think they shouldn't be building again in New Orleans. Even people that have homes right on the edge of a moutain in CA near the ocean are crazy.
Anybody that has a home just feet from the ocean needs to do something to protect their investment. Too many crazy things have been happening.
