Who's paying for all this?

Not even sure where to post this...
  1. Who is paying for this fancy website?
  2. Since it appears to be some kind of vbulletin website, why doesn't commie-data do the same things as this site? Does it cost more to implement more options? Or are they just a bunch of communists who want everyone to get the basic plan???
Thanks for creating such a great site and including all of us newcomers into "the plan".

Re: Who's paying for all this?

as with any forum... it all depends on the settings and who has their finger on the button!

Admin is best to answer this, but untimately, ads pay for this. Over at C-drones you see ads between every post. Click on a ad link, and they pay the site.

I'm glad I have Firefox with adblock, I never saw ads on city-data.

Re: Who's paying for all this?

I am covering all the expenses at the moment. Dedicated server, vBulletin License, vBSEO License, and some other small miscellaneous stuff. Advertisements and possibly an upgraded subscription option will eventually cover them. I will be adding more nice features when the site budget gets out of the negative. Most advertisements will be invisible to the upgraded usergroup that I recently put you in.

C-D also runs vBulletin on their forum, they just don't have it customised much except for the logo on top, and have many options disabled. It wouldn't cost them any extra to have all of the same current customizations as this site.

The ads are actually part of site, it's not an ad like you think, just a "for more info on burping pigs, click here". They are nestled between posts on threads and are driven based on the general topic being discussed, so if I post "Looking to buy a house in Seattle", the ads would be real estate based.

I don't really like to ask for them or put up big banners for them, but I will accept them through paypal if people are interested. After seeing your post I setup the following paypal donation link. Any donations will go to the website budget.

Do you know how much space you are using? And who is your hosting company?

Re: Who's paying for all this?

Wait, this site has already generated several gigs of data? And it only has a few thousand posts? That seems out of proportion. What's eating up the memory?

That includes the operating system. The site is only taking up 302MB at the moment.

Re: Who's paying for all this?

Maybe this has been posted before...

Admin...

Some of us are wondering who YOU are? I realize you may not want to reveal your true self but who were you at commie-data?

It would be hilarious if you said: "Members: I am your FATHER! I am the founder of city-data!" Dun, dun, duuuuuh... Gulp.

I was hoping we could do more for you with our hosting company.. and though I think you could get away with less space (For Now)... I hope that eventually you will need even more space.
