Re: Is it time for moderators?

Perhaps the forum, still in it's infancy, hadn't has such an emotional debate prior to last week - and thus, that was the reason you hadn't had any problems. You hadn't the opportunity to offend anyone yet.

Don't blame that thread on me. Don't blame what happened on me. Own it... they are your offensive thoughts. No one "called you names" or "picked on your views" - several people showed you instances in which the various definitions of "racist" fit with the comments you were posting, and clarified the inaccuracies that you were spouting.

I could also show you a quick search of your posts elsewhere which are equally inflammatory.

At least I make no bones about the fact that I am not afraid to speak up and speak out.

If the admin has a problem with the way I have conducted myself in any thread here, or doubts my authenticity, or has any other concern about my intentions with posting on this forum - I am sure he or she will PM me, or call me out publicly. Since neither has happened yet, I will take that as he or she is ok with my presence... and thus, I think I shall stick around.

It sounds like you are still ouching from that debate. Almost like you're still looking for a battle:) Please do not be offended by that. Just pointing out that you might want to relax and just have a cup of tea.

I think...but who am I...that folks learned a lot from that debate. Hopefully it was to be nice, civil, and agree to disagree. Am I dreaming again.

But I also think folks are ready to move on to other debates, discussions, and put this last week behind them. Are you ready to do that?

See you on the forum.

Izzy

Ouching? Not quite. I think that several things were uncovered with that debate, and my need to "ouch" wasn't one of them.

Not exactly, but I don't shy from one either. I am quite confident in my ability to express my thoughts and opinions - and will continue to do so if I still feel it's necessary. Not having been on the board all weekend, I see there are still claims and accusations that I feel warrant addressing.

I started that on Thursday - with several new posts, on varying topics. Since then, however, I see I am not the only one taking "shots" and still going on and on and on about it...

Unhappy Re: Is it time for moderators?

Man, I have been busy packing the last week and haven't been around.
What the HECK is going on?
People, if you don't like what a person has posted, then just ignore it.
Move on to another topic. Why keep reading into what that person has said and then debate them on it if it's going to upset you?
Just move on to a nicer topic.
We are all here together. We left another site because of the strict rules and the childish behavior there from the Mods.
We will make this work.
If we can't get along then it's a darn shame. We are only human and we all need each other here on this great big earth.
Get along guys.

Or, if you enjoy sparring, then spar. Isn't it OK for people to be nice AND express anger?

I agree with the essence of what you're saying --- that we shouldn't get all personally wrapped up in it, this is only a forum and we don't know each other. Wise advice. But if a person enjoys debate, then debate they should. The main recommendation I'd make is that we try to keep debates contained in debate threads so that people who want to see only NICE posts can be spared the pain of having to see others fight.

But the online world reflects the real world and I think it's productive to take an honest look at how human beings interact. We can use this type of forum as a laboratory for studying human behavior in a simulated miniature society.

That's the part I totally agree with. It's harmful to oneself to stew over an issue rather than move on. But again, we're expressing our "real world" selves in a virtual social gathering. If we get upset here, then it's an opportunity to look in the mirror and learn about ourselves. What are we REALLY upset about? Rarely do any of us get truly upset about our online interactions in isolation from other aspects of our lives that upset us. I believe we are experiencing here a simulation of that which affects us in real life but which we might not be facing honestly or effectively.

Agreed with everything except that last sentence.

Sheesh, she was joking! It was supposed to be funny! Why do you feel the need to continually attack someone over tongue-in-cheek humor? Let it go.

She was not joking but you may be thinking about something else...and not to what i am referring to. She is on my iggy list so i know of no jokes she made. I only wrote one sentence so what part did you agree with? When was the last time i attacked someone, please show me the post.

Re: Is it time for moderators?

I was quoting the sentence I didn't agree with. The rest of your post (which I didn't quote) was good.

Hmmm... was "Makes trouble on message boards :)" from Jenbar what you were referring to? You've been talking about often enough that I'd be shocked if that wasn't what you were talking about.

Maybe I should bring up your gambling addiction?

Yes, yes I do. You wanna bring up petty personal stuff from someone's bio, why can't I? And here you are admitting to and confirming your horrendous addiction. Shame, shame! Does your significant other know about this? Do you realize money doesn't grow on trees? With all the money you've wasted on gambling this year alone you could've bought a loaf of bread to feed your starving relations.

But if you win, cut me in on a share. One should remember to always help those less industrious than themselves.

Quote:
I enjoy a good debate. But...when i get attacked and called names it ends the debate. ... No i don't feel the need for mods. I think admin should be capable of seeing who is just plain and out trouble and who isn't. There's a big diff in debating an issue and picking on a persons views.
as it's true that name calling destroys a debate and after a while gets pretty old. I agree that I don't think there's a need for mods at this point and that I have faith in admin. I agree that there's a difference between disagreeing and mocking someone for not agreeing.

I disagreed with
Quote:

because you're harping on and on about something personal and really, really petty.
Quote:
and why the hostility?
Because it's easy to be hostile.

The nice side is what you read after I remember to edit two or three times. It always reads so much harsher than I think I'm projecting. There was one post where someone was getting rude at me, and I thought, "What's their problem?" then I looked at my post and realized, "Wow, that sounded a lot worse than I thought it did. No wonder."

I have a theory about that, actually. I think a lot of the hostility on forums is because people feel like they're "thinking at" their computers rather than talking to someone. All the nasty stuff that people learn not to say to people they're looking at doesn't get filtered when it's typed, but it still feels like it's being "edited" and said nicer than it actually is. Bad moods, unwarranted criticism, harsh thoughts, things best left unsaid, stuff that could've been worded nicer while carrying the same meaning, all the stuff that gets cut out one-on-one... just sort of pops up online. Add to that jokes/gentle prodding/irony/etc. taken seriously...

Plus all those moments when a person is too stunned to say anything or think up a witty retort... Face to face a faux pas or foot in the mouth will often slide, but online... there's all the time in the world.

Not to me, no. You ain't said anything bad to/about me. And no, I don't have you "mixed up" with someone else. You're the 100% white female with Sicilian blood, some royalty, that keeps changing her avatar that calls herself "RAINBOWWAVES", correct?

You and Jenbar been having this catbrawl and I've decided to join in.

No way! I own one! That's where I make my money.

...Now for a moment of seriousness...

You took that seriously? Apparently I wasn't making my posts about your "gambling addiction" ridiculous enough. My point was to show how ridiculous harping on a line in a bio is, how petty it is, and how foolish it makes the other person look. I guess I succeeded? :smiley face with question marks above head:

BTW, in case anyone's confused, no I have nothing to do with the "Nigerian Prince" scam, and no, I don't own a mental institution.
