Growing Palms in Colder Climates

I am a zone 6/7 in Connecticut- and have had good success growing cold hardy windmill palms (Trachycarpus fortunei) in the ground here with only plastic covering in the winter. Any others grow subtropical stuff in colder climates?

Re: Growing Palms in Colder Climates

No, it would never work here. Do you have a hot house DM? I brought my palms in the house, after they've done so well all summer outside, and eventually....I'm sure they will die. They either get mites, or I water them too much, or not enough. Then I go through the guilt thing of.....Hurry up and die, or perk up!........ I'm in Zone 7, and I'm sure they would never live outside. I really wish I had some sort of hot house. I was going to make one last year out of old windows we had saved, and we were going to do something to the back of our garage....but, it never happened.

Re: Growing Palms in Colder Climates

Palms along the coast at your location (RB) Is a zone 8- and the two alms I grow here outside are easy there- without winter protection as a use here.

I grow these palms in a zone 6/6 in inland eastern CT
Trachycarpus fortunei - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

GO over and see my post about my palms and a picture on the Massachusetts forum.

These palms can be grown easily in your location with minimal winter protection away from the oceanfront as well.
