Warning: if you aren't a hard-core data geek, you will find this inexplicable.

So far, my favorite site tracking the ENSO (El Nino/Southern Oscillation) state is here, updated roughly monthly. The newest discussion is towards the bottom of that page (and the stuff between the chart on top and the new stuff at the bottom tends to be changed only rarely).

At the moment, we seem to be heading toward neutral conditions after having been in a mild La Nina. If you remember the autumn & winter of 1973-4, the current stretch resembles that more than the others in the record.

my background is geography- and some in climatology- we are getting some really cold temps here- average high is 50-only 33 today.

17 last night. Our pond is partically frozen which means the dogs can't eat the frozen goose poop!
