| Should I move to Savannah, Georgia?
My boyfriend has this new job opportunity in Savannah, Ga that would last 3 years. He would like me to go with him. He's willing to turn the job down if I'm unwilling to go with him but I can tell he really wants to go. He says I would love it there, because he's lived there before. I'm a student in Austin, Tx so i'd be transferring to Georgia Southern University, I don't mind switching schools but as for locations this is a big step. As tourist sites are biased, I don't know what to expect. Please, if you've lived there or visited let me know what it's like, and persuade me or dissuade me to make the move. Also if you know anything about Georgia Southern University, please fill me in. Thanks!

Your best bet is to visit Savannah first and make up your mind. Some call it the "Little New Orleans", but more in the way of comparing the high crime rate there rather than culture. Savannah for a city of that size has a pretty big drug/gang/crime problem, as well as a large lower income/poverty rate amongst the large minority population. The architecture is really cool, the moss covered trees are romantic. But I personally would not live there. Some people consider a job important enough to relocate. I'm not one of those people. Quality of life is more important to me. Jobs can be found almost anywhere. Just my opinion. |

Altanta... would that be "little New Orleans" pre or post Katrina? ;) Tangible Hope - Just my opinion; you should move... after he proposes to you. Boyfriends are just that... boy - friends. If he is willing to not take the job, sounds like he is interested in vesting his life with you, maybe you guys should talk about changing your status from ~friend to engaged?? Duff

Either way, Savannah is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't wanna live there. As I said earlier, while some job markets aren't exactly overflowing these days, I wouldn't pick up and relocated to a city like that just for a job, unless maybe it included a 2 million dollar home and private jet. LOL.

Savannah has "charming" areas. The squares (parks) are nice, the architecture of some of the homes is unique to that area, and the River Street tourist area is ok to take up your time for a couple of hours (it's not NEARLY as big as some folks think it is). So again, nice to visit, "but"... About 1.5 hours North of Savannah is Charleston, SC. The historic district there is so much cleaner and more controlled (no bums, groups of teens allowed to loiter, etc). Much larger shopping district and more tourist things to do in the historic center as well as the area. You could easily spend days there finding things to do, but I'm not sure the job market is very hot as far as actually living there.
