Racism in Augusta

Anyone live in or around Augusta? Anyone just FEEL the racism there?

A couple of years ago, I was sitting in a Dairy Queen in the same parking lot as this building suite that I was thinking of leasing. I was talking to this crusty old southern gent about the lease. I knew that the place was owned by a black and there were a couple of black families there. This guy starts going off on the N word OUT LOUD and about "their culture" and I was shocked to say the least! I just nodded by head and tried to act inconspicuous as possible while this was going on. He didn't appear to have any ill-will--he was just having what appeared to be a normal conversation. Apparently no one else cared since no one even looked over at us. That was the oddest thing about it...

People in Atlanta may have no idea what I'm talking about. I think the city and the area is too new. But go to some place like Augusta where time has stood still for 100 years and you'll know what I mean. Racism is alive and well in the South--especially in Augusta.

It's very sad... It's part of the reason why we moved. The biggest reason was a business opportunity in CT but if we had to stay in GA I would rather have lived in Atlanta. Another reason to leave was the summer heat, but that's another subject...

(Sorry if this might be in the wrong forum but it just didn't seem like it would be appropriate to move it to another one since this is a topic for Augusta only).

Wow, what a culture shock. It's sad to see that there are still areas like this. Wonder how many sets of white sheets he owns? Sad thing is, probably none, just his culture. Also, though. Old coots like that don't change very readily.
