Hi I am just SO SICK OF ALL OF IT! I own a home in San Jose and in Los Banos. I spend most of my time in Central Valley because of my need to travel back and forth between Palo Alto and Fresno. I am JUST SICK OF ALL OF IT!

I love warm weather and sunshine, but dang, Washington is beautiful. I always though of Kentucky as being similar with lots of trees and water. What is the biggest attraction/draw for living there, other than the derby?

What a beautiful land. Have always considered finding a spot in W. Kentucky near Owensboro. Beautiful lakes, caves. Lots of Horse Country. I was born in E. Kentucky and many of my extended family-members still live there. I have many acquaintances in the music biz who say if they couldn't wake up in Kentucky when they get off the road, they'd just as soon sleep! Before the white-man came, the Cherokee ruled lands to the south and east while the Shawnee ruled lands north. The two tribes were generally "at war" with each other. However, both sent hunting and fishing parties into the Cumberland area for weeks at a time - and they co-existed. Neither tribe would build villages in the area - too rough and rocky to farm and the weather a bit too harsh. Guess they had never seen Wyoming or Nevada yet. But the plentiful game and fish attracted everyone back then - and still does. It's a slower pace. They have great education. As a matter of fact, I grew up in Ohio and never knew that the only "state" that won the civil war was Kentucky! They were the only state to claim lands on the north side of the Ohio River - originally, to set up observation posts to see boats coming from miles away - and after the war, they kept it! Now, every Kentucky schoolkid learns it but Ohio never even whispered it in our schools! If one wants to live around Cincinnati, Kentucky is the place to be - especially Newport. And drop in to Newport-on-the-Levee for a tour through this gigantic walk-thru aquarium or a paddle-wheel dinner cruise on the Ohio. |

Hi! I grew up in Nothern Kentucky (independence) Yes...know all the history and such. My family was one of the original settlers in Kentucky. I kick myself for getting rid of my proptery in Ky. What part of Eastern Kentucky are you from? My parents bought a place in eastern ky about 10 years ago when they retired. I'm going back to look for property in April. What state are you in now? My paternal family left VA and entered Kentucky between 1811-1815, Floyd County of which their part became Magoffin county in 1860. From Riceville to Ivyton. My ggrampa moved his family to Johnson County, his son - my gpa - moved to Boyd and I was born in Ashland, raised in Ohio. Since then, I've moved or stayed for extended periods in many states - travelled them all. My maternal family came from SC and wobbled between mostly Elliot County KY and Ironton, OH - the whole gamut. I was adopted at 2 1/2 and did not find them until Christmas Day 2003. Kentucky is a great place to live - especially if you're from there. Peace My mat

I do have access to some pictures - mostly boring stuff like Country-Singers' sidewalks, gravestones and such - they're on some genealogy-sites I belong to - but if you ever get that way, you can take paddle-wheel-boat dinner cruises across from Cincinnati at Newport-On-The-Levee, Newport Kentucky. An event they call "Tall Stacks" occurs in early October also - three days or so of the really big paddle-wheelers coming from Pittsburg and headed for St. Louis - many cruises, many famous musicians performing on them.

Wyody, You got gravestones?! That is a must post! I'm a weirdo, but old places and cemeteries are so cool! Can't wait to see them!

Lexington is fine...Louisville is pretty urban....east KY ? that's like east TN, it's attractive physically, but it's educational base is low and it's full of 'goobers' in "Gooberville", if you like that sort of social milieu and mindset, it's a great place

Drop into www.tribalpages.com and enter the user-name dogg - go to pics of ... I forget how it's worded but basically "no longer living" - you'll find some stone pics there. Several search-sites exist for locating graves around the country and much work is ongoing by folks who actually walk old cemeteries and photograph the stones to publish on the net. It might be slightly interesting to note that one of my lines originated in Gravesend, Kent, England!

Not to disagree with your assessment of the area entirely - but I hope you understand that there are some wonderful people in the Cumberland area - which encompasses E. KY and E. TN among other areas ... and they're very, very real when compared to some of the phoniness(sp?) involved with living in the traditionally educated and high-dollar towns...not to mention they cook real good. Mmmmmm good! And they have colleges and honor-rolls and churches and businesses. Not sure you'd enjoy it but I'd like to suggest a visit to the area if you haven't done so yet - I get to go there every half-century or so and it's a great relief from the b/s of the fake world that most of us operate in. Not only that, 'mater, I was borned there. Harrrrumph!! (didn't grow up there though - so I'll wiggle yo' bad self off'n the hook this time). Peace Hill Bill - ody

Hmmmm ..I have the er, 'fortune' of having lived in TN, so my experience is truly my own, so are my opinions when another poster asks a question. Surely we don't have to agree on ANYTHING to participate, i.e. answering another's thread DO we ? That would be silly. I'm glad you were "borned" (sic) there !......we all have to be "borned" somewhere I suppose !............geez And no, I don't live in Gooberville at all ! I choose to live in Sarasota and in LaJolla. SHALOM |

Glad you've lived in E. Tennessee - nice to know you weren't posting from an unlearned opinion. I agree with being able to post dissenting but non-violent opinions about an area 'cause I've really disliked a couple of places I've lived and have similar opinions of the folks there. I'd thought that perhaps you were just being onery. Not a big fan of the Gulf coast - preferred the Atlantic-side of FL but nice to know you live somewhere nice. Think I still have some friends over your way. I'm not sure I'd refer to Louisville as urban - but that's just an opinion - actually, I'm not sure how I would refer to Louisville. J-Town is easier to describe (IN) while Louisville scares the bejesus outta me. And while I take no real offense to your "Gooberville" reference, I really always thought that was in North Carolina near Lumberton
