Red face Former Louisiana Resident

Just wanted to let people know that if anyone needs relocation info or just advice regarding Louisiana, I may be able to help. I lived in Bossier City (sister city to Shreveport) for about two years and then we moved to Baton Rouge for about two years. I will try to answer any questions to the best of my ability!

Re: Former Louisiana Resident

what is the biggest draw for moving to Louisiana? I heard that things were pretty tough around there.

Being that the French once owned this area, is there any European culture or influence in the state? Would someone from eastern Europe, say Poland find a community down there that would be friendly to people like markablue moderator?

LOL...I'm not sure I should be answering these questions! I personally think that markablue moderator would have a very difficult time getting along with anyone anywhere in the States! She might want to visit New York City...that's where the ACLU headquarters is.

As far as the culture in Louisiana...one must realize that there is south Lousiana and then there are the northerners...it's actually as if there were two different states. The northern Louisianans (Shreveport and Monroe) are similar to those that live in east Texas...fairly friendly and pretty average. The southern area...which includes Baton Rouge and New Orleans is like a totally different world. They don't even really like to be associated with the northerners.

Southern Louisiana has a variety of culture...you can find a bowl of gumbo, crawfish, clairvoyants, voo doo, very unique art and just an immense amount of things to do if one is into that type of thing.

There are different 'areas' of town, however...at least in Baton Rouge. Certain cultures and races are much more welcome in some areas than others. It also seemed as if the people there were either extremely educated or people who lacked even a basic education. There weren't a lot of people, from my standpoint, who were of average intelligence. It was feast or famine.

I've spoken with a few people who truly enjoyed living in southern Louisiana because they were really fascinated with how unique everything there was.

I work here in Louisiana, and I can hardly stand most of the people. Granted there are a few who are real good people, but most are just backward, and ignorant. This is speaking from the Morgan City area. There is a large amount of adultry in Louisiana amongst the housewives. I was apalled at how open the women are down here when their husbands leave to go work offshore for a month, or even just a couple of weeks. I would never even consider living here. In and out to go to work is more than enough for me.

That's very interesting...I didn't realize that. I have to agree with a lot of what you've said. You're right, there are a few extremely nice people, but they are few and far between. Why get married in the first place if you don't want to keep the vows? I've never really understood that. How long will you be working there?

I live in Texas, for the moment. In about 3 years I am moving to New Hampshire, and probably will look at other prospects there for myself. I might stay on the payroll just for interesting jobs with the company I work for. It just depends on what is going on. Like I said, I work out of the La. office, but live in Texas.

Which part of Texas are you living in? Do you have a long commute? It's such an enormous, yet diverse state and each area is very different.

I live in San Antonio. It's 8 hrs to get to work. Then I am away for weeks at a time, sometimes a couple months.

I think San Antonio is probably my second favorite place to live. For Louisiana being so close to Texas, it's amazing how totally opposite Morgan City and San Antonio are. Sounds as though you have a very interesting job.

Well I barely like San Antonio more than Louisiana. Actually, I can't stand either place and am moving back to the Northeast as soon as my wife is out of university. Too hot, too many illegal aliens.

It helps so much if you like the area that you're living in. I've never lived out Northeast, but I have a feeling I probably wouldn't like it nearly as much as San Antonio or Florida. It's all good...I hope everything works out for you guys and you're able to move back soon.
