I want to move to Maryland, but don't know where, exactly.?

Hi Folks. I'm originally from the Midwest, but am currently living in Brooklyn, NY. I want to move to a quite middle class community in Maryland. I also plan to attend grad school in 2009 in Annapolis. I am a single, self-employed web designer and can take my work with me. Thus, my question, where in Maryland can someone like myself move?

The most important things are safety and peace-of-mind (i.e. no loud neighbors, druggies and gangs). I can deal with a long commute to Annapolis.

My budget for rent would be $1000 or less. I will also consider Delaware.

Try most areas in Anne Arundel County and maybe Bowie in PG county.

First question is where in Annapolis do you plan to attend grad school? There are lots of colleges in Maryland, but Annapolis only has the Naval Academy and you must have a Congressional appointment to attend that school.
Most of Maryland is very safe. The exceptions are some areas of Prince Georges County and the city of Baltimore.
Your rent budget is low for most of the area. Delaware is more affordable. Commuting is a nightmare in the metropolitan region. Commuting from Delaware to Maryland involves a trip across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, a costly and time consuming journey.
A good option may be the city of Frederick. There are quite a few job opportunities for web design there, rent prices are a bit more affordable and the community is generally safe. Hood College does offer graduate studies.

I am sorry to inform you, but you cannot rent anything "safe" anywhere in MD for 1k, bring your rent up to 1700 and I can help you out then.

What about one of those small town areas? Like, Suddlersville? Or, Chestertown is a very nice area, and about 1/2 mile from the bridge. Or, maybe a little more.

Wicomico County, Maryland is also a very nice area. It's very country-like, but within 30 minutes you can be in Ocean City, MD. The largest city in Wicomico County is Salisbury. Sussex County, Delaware and Wicomico County, Maryland run together. Delaware has tax free shopping, and Sussex County, Delaware (west side) has some very moderate rentals, much less than $1,000/month.
