Moving to Boston soon...looking for a fun neighborhood?

I'm 35, female, and single, but don't want to be forever. Any advice on fun, upbeat neighborhoods near the commuter line to Providence? I'm looking for a one, possibly two bedroom, and willing to go up to $1800. Thanks!

1. It's cheaper to live in or near Providence. Providence has fun neighborhoods, too!

2. If you prefer Boston, does "don't want to be single forever" mean you want to be somewhere that you'll meet a lot of single guys your age, or single women, in case you're gay?

If gay, try Jamaica Plain, or Somerville's Davis Square.

If straight, avoid student-filled neighborhoods like The Fenway, Mission Hill, and Brighton/Allston, where you'll mostly meet 20-somethings.

Married folks tend to move out to the suburbs, eventually. You'll have better luck meeting other singles in the urban areas. There are fun neighborhoods where the residents are of all ages in Cambridge, Somerville, Jamaica Plain, and Boston's North End. Roslindale Square is very nice, and Roslindale, Hyde Park, and Jamaica Plain are all fairly convenient to the commuter train to Providence.
