| Re: Japanese Cars *lol* What I meant is that at one time --back in the 80's?-- anybody who drove a Japanese car was suspect of having anti-American actions by not supporting the UAW workers who were getting laid off because of the influx and purported quality of Japanese vehicles. It wasn't just in Michigan but because the majority of the UAW workers were there and being the headquarter of the big-3, it was more accentuated. I'm positive that the sentiment still exists but would one necessarily feel unsafe driving a vehicle that wasn't made by Ford or Chrysler. Would you always have to feel like your car would be vandalized or that you could be in any physical harm in retaliation for driving a non-American made vehicle? Maybe not. But do Michigan residents feel the greater need to buy Fords and GM products than do folks in other states? Probably a pretty stupid question but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway. --'rocco |

Yup! I had a Toyota truck back then too. It was the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. I never had to do anything but routine maintenance on it ...NOTHING ever went wrong with it nor did it ever leave me stranded, unlike the dozens of other vehicles I've owned. I always tell people (in private, of course) that an intelligent person buys a Toyota. I mean it's a no-brainer ...they're bullet-proof. Anti-American sentiment or not aside, isn't that the smart thing to buy when it comes to your personal vehicle? Now I know that statement will open up a whole new can of worms and can be debated for days on end. As for me actually following through on it, I find that I have to have a German car every once in awhile. So I usually have an assortment of German and Japanese cars at any given time. The last American (big-3 ) built car I had was back in college decades and decades ago. One car I do drive now is a Subie Outback which was assembled in Indiana but still is essentially a Japanese car. --'rocco |

I gotta tole ya this quick story: My wife and I were driving from the Wind Rivers of Wyoming back to Nashville to do a little studio-stuff. I had my van & trailer in front and she was following behind in a Subaru. Along about the Nebraska/Iowa line, her car started acting up. I determined it was the fuel filter so we pulled off the interstate in NE, looking for a filter. The few folks where we stopped kinda raised their ball-caps, wrinkled their foreheads, lifted two fingers up to scratch the back of their head saying "Suber-what??" and we moved on - on and across the border and into Iowa - where we came upon an even different breed of human pulling the same stunt ... 'Suber- What???'. Well, luckily, we made it on to Atlantic Iowa where I'd been fortunate enough to have broken down twice before - where the local mechanic (who I'd become first-name acquaintance with) happened to have a Subaru fuel-filter on hand. I told him "Rod, I sure am glad you happened to have one of those on hand" - he said "Oh, I don't work on cars no more, only trucks but I [i]knew[i] you'd be comin' this way again"!! To this day, I can't figure out how he could've known we would have a Subaru because last time through, it was our Ford Truck that had given up the ghost in Atlantic ... and we didn't even own a Subaru!

My first car was a '67 Mustang that my dad had rebuilt. The poor thing, I used to carry oil with me in a gallon-sized jug! In 1985 I bought an '82 Toyota Corolla-Tercel (yes you're reading right, don't dare challenge that like countless counter parts guys have tried!). I kept that until 2002 when I bought a '97 Toy Corolla. Still have that and I let the husband drive that and now we have, ok I drive it LOL, a 2002 Camry. Having said all that, I always try to buy local/state/US, however when the American cars can stand up to the Toys, then I might consider a switch |

I've had maybe a million cars and trucks and vans and I've had my favorites but I've got to say that, for personal use, the two absolute best were that Subaru - an 84 DL and our current Suzuki Esteem (96). Small, fast, great on gas, almost no maintenance ... and the Suzuki is even comfortable! For the field though, Ford Trucks have been #1 with Toyota #2! So now I've got that Suzuki and this great, little, old Ford Escort that I picked up from a professor in Indiana and I'm fine with both - but now I need a van to haul mother-in-law and her wheelchairs and walkers around in - so, I suppose the Escort will have to go.
