10,000 Lakes

OK, So, Minnesota is known to have 10,000 lakes. Using Google earth I can see where you get that name. Dang people that is one big load of lakes in the west over there! My question is, what is the source for all these lakes? Snow pack?

Re: 10,000 Lakes

Minnesota is the "Land of 10,000 lakes", not 1,000. There is actually 11,842 lakes over 10 acres in size. They were left by glaciers long ago.

I really didn't realize that lakes are so rare in some other places until I moved away from Minnesota. Here around Charlotte there is 2 main lakes that people go to and both are man made.

Sorry about that, missed a zero on my post.

Are these lakes open for recreation, living, enjoying?

It would be only fair to mention that not all of these lakes are the wonderful, dip-your-feet-in, bring the boat type of lakes. Some are really, really tiny - equivalent to a pond on a farm - and briney or, sulfury or, hematitic(iron) or, just plain nasty or, loaded with leeches! Others are pristine, fairly large, teeming with fish and abundant with surrounding wildlife - matter of fact, I once came upon an animal in the far north that I still have not been able to identify! Was larger than a puma, larger than a giant otter - but was neither! I suppose I might have been lucky it didn't eat me!! Also, northern Minnesota is the actual headwaters of the mighty Mississippi River and there are swamps and even quicksand that can reach right up and surprise you during a passive walk in the woods! Nothing like catching a Northern Pike though ... except maybe pulling up a barracuda! And never, ever forget to grab a piece of pie in the town of Effie!

Re: 10,000 Lakes

I lived in Ottertail county for about 17 years and most of the lakes in that area were sandy-bottomed clear water lakes. Great for swimming and fishing, but August was always the best month for that...they don't get nearly as warm as the bathwater temperatured gulf coast!!!

This is wonderful news! I will contact Markablue moderator and let her know about the perfect place for her to vacation this summer!

Now I'll be scrambling to pull my Atlas outta the car looking for Ottertail county! <smile> no prob. All I know about MN can be phrased by the words "Iron Range" or "Up Narth" - from Hibbing to Silver Bay (North of Duluth) and west about halfway thru the state then north to Int'l Falls area.
It's really cool in the Iron Range - as the maples grow so doggone high - but the iron is close to the surface and so, when the wind blows hard, there'll be a 200ft maple blown over with a 30ft root-system only about 10inches thick - big enough to almost build a house in it's shadow! ... oh, and one complaint - they didn't seem to know what "biscuits & gravy" was! However, best cajun food I ever ate was in Hibbing Minnesota!! (transplant opened a restaurant)

Keep her out of Minnesota. Send her to Alabama instead.

OK, agreed, markablue moderator should not come to minnesota.

I already sent her and Yac a round trip amtrak ticket from LA to Hawaii. Told her she should bring her bikini and Yac his speedo.

They don't get quite as warm, but they also don't have sharks, jellyfish, and stingrays.

The Otter Tail River was fairly warm this past weekend. I went tubing down it.

Re: 10,000 Lakes

Good point, T.S. We've had encounters with jellyfish, but the sharks usually stay out near the drop-offs. As far as stingrays go, last October we watched someone accidentally catch one while fishing...it was huge! Shuffling your feet usually scares them away.

I've never been tubing down the Ottertail River, but my little sister said it was fun. One thing I really don't miss about Minnesota is the swimmer's itch or chiggers.

I have heard of chiggers, but don't think that I have ever had a problem with them. I remember being warned about chiggers often while camping in Arkansas and Missouri when I was younger.
