Mississippi ? everybody has an opinion, but it's the poorest and dumbest state in the Union, certainly technically NOT the 'place to be' ! would never live there, lived in Memphis and that was too close and too much like backward MS for my tastes and pleasure

hmmm I can't think of one state that I've lived in that's 'worse' (facts, figures, poverty, education, you know the things that count) that the great state of Mississippi...sorry, not one...even Alabamians say "thank god for MS" (so they would not be LAST in most societal/governmental measurements)

Nearly everyone I've ever met from Mississippi has been among the nicest folks I've ever known. Although seemingly "normal" in their human-impulses, the men have been the epitomy of "southern gentlemen" and the women have been among the most sincere. Every last one of them has been in love with their state. I've only passed through the north and south but found it a very pleasant drive. |

That is how I think of Mississippi, southern charm, weaping willows on the shore. I am sure there are areas that are not so great, as in with any state, but that would not stop me from making a visit, grabbing a rocking chair and an iced tea, and having a sit down with my friends.

Miss. does tend to be at the bottom of a LOT of lists. Normally Alabama is right near the bottom too. That doesn't mean they're hell on Earth. Some people might hate the smartest state (I don't recall off the top of my head). I'm sure Miss. has its issues (haven't looked into it - it's too hot without the benefits for me of Florida), like hurricanes and maybe tornadoes, heat, poverty, whatever, but it shouldn't automatically be written off. Surely it has its merits. |

A few years ago I was traveling from Dallas to Tampa. Now normally, you would go over to Shreveport and cut down 49. Or you can go over into Tennesee and cut down Hwy 49 there. I had traveled down the 49 from Shreveport many times and decided I wanted to do something different. So I went on across. About 5 miles before I got to the Mississippi, a barge had broken loose and struck the bridge. It was 18 inches off center. So they closed the crossing. I just hooked a right on the nearest highway and headed South. Figured sooner or later I'd hit I-10. Well, I got down South a ways and had to cross the river. I got into Mississippi. It turned to gravel. There was a guy in bib overalls working on some fence so I stopped and walked over to encounter how to get to the nearest highway. I explained what happened. He said, "Yall go down this road for a piece and when you get to Ron's house, yall turn left. Then go that way for a piece and the road will divide, take the beaten trail. And he went back to fixin fence. I figured, ok, I'll figure out something different. I got back in my pickup and headed down that road. Sure enough, I come up to a house and under the mail box was a sign. Said, "Rons House". I turned left. About 5 miles the road divided and sure enough, it was plain which was the most used side. About another 2 miles and I was back on pavement headed for Florida.

I like that story 53. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow...and it makes sense in the end. You're such a great story teller.:) The nicest and richest person I've ever met was in bib overalls. Had a manison type home on a lake. Never been to Mississippi but it sounds like a great place to visit. Izzy

I'm glad you mentioned that Pan. I've been wanting to bring it up for some time - but didn't want to break your heart. Which tells me it's nearly time to bring up an alternative forum - a forum for bashing and destroying that special state, city or town that you absolutely hate to death! That locale that is destroying your very vitality - can't get out, vortex-riddled, suck-hole of a "God, why did I ever move here"! type of place - that place where the ex lives, that place where you would, if given one great and final wish, call in the bombers! I've got one too, Pan - and it's not even in Texas!

| Re: The State to be is Mississippi When I first got there they where MT as it was cold. Well cold to them. I was in the water. LOL Yes they kept the area Clean. I used to like going to the I-HOP right by the beach. The first Boat I worked on there was Just a Skip Me and Pap would go out for Mullet. But when we where out there,( Not far at all Mind you as a skip is Basically a row boat with a small motor) The dolphins would swim along the side of us within touch distance. The only odd thing I found about there beaches was the sign that read NO MOLESTATION OF SEA MAMMALS That kinda scared me, with all the stories of the south I heard and being young and all. LOL it was a long time ago. They hadn't even gotten scratch tickets yet. And the only casino was in Biloxi, and it was a boat that you got on and it went to the 3 mile limit to gamble. lol The day after I left 2 or 3 tornado's tore through Biloxi and Gulfport outskirts.. I do miss it it is nice. Back then it was a different world from what it is now.

We stopped in Gulfport last fall and people warned us not to swim in the water because there was still a lot of debris from the hurricanes.

Check this link.. it is current.. Mississippi Beach Monitoring Program Pick one of the 3 locations you will see. then a map of that area will pop up with either a red + or a green + all along the coast with a number. If you click the plus (+) sign a pop up will pop up with a picture of that beach and data on it. When I get there I will take plenty of pictures and post them in this area for you all to see. From about the time I was 14 till about 18 We would visit my grandfather there... back then there were no casinos.. and you did not swim in the gulf unless you went out to the islands, like ship island. I was walking on the beach with a girl I met there and I stepped on a stingray who had kicked sand ontop of himself and was on the beach because the water with-drew. Well he did not like being stepped on and stung me something fierce. Leg swelled up like a beach ball.. and the pain was horrible. So now I am very cautious on Gulf beaches. In corpus I saw a shark swimming around out near mustang island. And jelly fish can be a real problem too. So I swim in pools now lol.

I liked the link. The pictures were great. Yipes! Wyody. Sounds like swimming in the area is risky. After the news about Chrocodile Hunter I would think you were lucky he didn't shot a barb at you. Although I sure you didn't feel lucky at the time. My daughter-in-law's aunt was killed by a great white here in california. She was wearing a wet suit and swimming near seals. The seals disappeared and all of sudden she went under. He got her twice. I get my toes wet at the ocean...that's about it. Izzy

I've handled my small share of crocs and gators, been stung by man o' wars and chased by 'cuda - but never stepped on a ray or got stung by one.
