Runzas...anyone?

My husband is from Fremont, Nebraska, and whenever we visit it is a PRIORITY to get runzas. If you are not aware of what a runza is, then let me explain:

A runza is ground beef, onion, cabbage and delectable spices tucked and baked inside a mini bread roll. It's difficult to explain, but it's definitely a necessity to try if you are ever in the area! It's also very important that we get to Taco John's, but that's another story!

Does anyone else know what a runza is?

Taco Johns is something that I miss from Minnesota. They are my favorite taco place. Taco Bell doesn't even come close.

My son and I were driving back from South Carolina. We stopped and got some McDonalds to eat as we were traveling. We got back on the road and the very next exit had a Taco Johns. We pulled in, threw away our Mccy D's and went in and got some real food. Don't even remember where it was, but it shocked us that there was a Taco Johns out East.

You just described a beerock. Or at least that's what the same thing is called at the Beerock Shop out in California.

Really? I wasn't aware of that...maybe they have something like that in Florida. Thanks for the info, Cleozmom! Especially since I'm not able to get Taco John's down here. I don't think I've known anyone who doesn't like their food.

Hi! Unfortunately, my hubby recently had his yearly physical and found out that he is supposed to stay away from beef products...his triglycerides (sp?) were incredibly high, so we've been doing a lot of chicken and turkey, lately. He has a follow-up check-up within the next couple of weeks...that will determine if we can splurge with Beerocks or Runzas and that's the recipe I will try.

Hope your husband gets his cholesterol straight! You could substitute ground chicken or turkey maybe?

I'm a little bit of a pansy when it comes to ground turkey/chicken... but we've been doing very well staying away from beef, so maybe I'll try the extra, extra, extra lean beef...

KC, I never had a real prob with ground turkey - but even when I used to eat it, I'd use at least 1/3 ground beef so it'd have enough fat to fry itself - it added muchly to the taste as well.
I don't eat it anymore. Mrs Ody doesn't care for healthy food.
The Xtra lean beef does nothing for me. Kinda like ground-up watch-bands. Mother-in-Law eats it though. Something wrong about that.

Wyody, if you buy Angus ground sirloin, which is extremely lean, it still comes out nice and moist and not like ground up watch bands which that one made me chuckle

Thanks for the tip Cleozmom. As soon as I get a better grip on grocery prices in the cities compared to my little coastal town here in Oregon, remind me to post the high grocery prices here in my "no sales tax" state. Especially on meats including, somewhat surprisingly, fish!

If it helps you out any, my aunt and uncle would go to Salem and hit Winco and only use Lincoln City for those little last minute things. However, not sure you're going to find the Angus ground sirloin there. I buy most of my meats at Albertson's, I know it run more, but that's where I can get my mock tender roast to make my beef pot roast and my shredded beef tacos at

Some of our seniors make the trip to Salem once or twice a month - special dietary needs and such. There's also a Winco at McMinneville which is closer than Salem.
The Mrs and I eat out quite a bit so our food expense for the home goes down and we don't have a lot of spare time so the free time we do have is usually taken up with walks on the beach and the occasional drive to Newport for (for Pete's Sake!) WalMart! As much as I've always hated WalMart, here we are stuck with that as the only place to grab a shirt, shoes, pants, etc ... unless we wish to go to the much hated Fred Meyers - which we don't, we make do with what the town offers and if we have to go to Salem or Portland, make a stop on the way back. I wish, if WalMart were the only place that they'd at least build a super-size one - although McMinneville has one of those as well. Lowes is also in McMinneville as is the nearest Shari's restaurant is we want a break from Richens here in town - which is currently the best food in town. Breaking News: A place called "Dory Cove" was apparently the best food in town - but it had burned down before we came. Very soon, two of the three partners will be opening "Captain Ron's" at the south end of town - which reportedly will have a similar menu with the same recipes.
Again, thanks for the tips. I hope to make my special Chile Verde soon.

Re: Runzas...anyone?

Yes, thanks for the tip, CleozMom! I know this sounds weird, but I've never tried ground turkey or chicken. Do they have a significantly different taste than ground beef? Would I be able to taste the difference?

Albertsons is great for meats, but yes, a little more expensive. I tried ground beef at Walmart twice and both times I about passed out because it had a really bad odor. I thought maybe it was just possibly bad the first time, but smelled and tasted exactly the same the second time. Down here in Florida we have a grocery store native to Florida called Publix. It's a little pricey, but I've been extremely impressed with their products...especially the store brand stuff...most of the time it's even better than the name brand items.
