How do YOU Pronounce "Nevada?"

People think it's funny when we say words like "boat" because of our long "o" sound. Imagine holding the "o" in that word for a little longer than normal...

Well, the reason I ask this question is that, evidently, Pres. W.Bush once visted the state and made a short speech. He pronounced it Na VAUGH da.

It seemed to get a lot of the native Nevadans riled up that he could come to their state and mispronounce the name when talking to them.

Many residents even pronounce it that way and the locals all tell me that they know right off that the person is a transplant when they hear that Navaughda pronunciation.

I can understand why it's mispronounced because it is of Spanish derivation meaning snow-covered or covered in snow. As such, it SHOULD be pronounced Nevahhda but it's not.

A few years ago, the state issued a specialty license plate that had Nevăda (note the ă) emblazoned across the top to call attention to the pronunciation.

Don't Call it Nuh-va-duh!

I say it Ne va da with the "a" like "at", not like "all". I think that's the western way...
