Any tips on moving to New Hampshire from California?

We are a young family from California. When the proposed move happens.....we will be driving across the country and have a couple of stops to make in the South so we will go that way and up the Atlantic coast..... instead of cutting through the midwest. Our kids will be 8, 6 and 2 when this happens. We are thinking that June would be a good time to move, right after school is out here. Is that a good time to travel across the U.S.? Are there any great places that we absolutely should visit? I was born in Alabama (and moved to So.Cal as a baby) so I'm definately going to visit the city I was born in. We are thinking that the trip should take a week or two. My husband will be driving a u-haul with one of our cars behind and I'll be driving the mini-van.
Also, are there particular cities to avoid along the way? This move is about 14 months away so I have time to plan.

All I can say, is just don't bring the California lifestyle with you. New Hampshire is slow paced, and small town and that's how people like it. California ideas are not welcome. If you're looking to change your environment and mold yourself to New Hampshire ways, that's good.
