Building Codes

I have had the opportunity now to be living and working in this beautiful State for the last three months. Unfortunately the building codes ar lax and the builders are taking advantage of it. Its buyer be ware. If you do not know what you are looking for I would ask a lot of questions. Its the simple things like no Tyvec or something comparable, bolting down of plates, no grade mandated by the county etc.

Cuban, it's good to hear you are enjoying the state. One of my favorites but it's been a long time since I was there.
It's a bit of a trade-off with the codes and all. Depends on where you are to some extent. If you're far enough inland to not sweat the Hurricanes then, it's either snow, rain or bears.
In the west, a lot of people enjoy New Mexico because of relaxed codes - the actor Dennis Weaver publicized this a lot some years ago - a haven for experimental-housing enthusiasts who couldn't try their ideas in other states.
In the east, I would assume it's very similar throughout all of Appalachia and the Smokies but with rules getting tighter as we go along.
It's also good that you're aware of the problems and can alert people that are considering a relocation to North Carolina. Glad you're here.

You might be right I can only talk about the Charlotte area. One of the things that people need to be aware of the most is there lot and how its going to drain. A lot of people pay extra for a premium lot only to find out only a small portion is usable do to a sway or a hill it that it backs up to.

Re: Building Codes

Funny here people complain about the building codes being way to strict. But they never have seen the consequences of the ones that are not there. I for one like having them enforced vigorously. From Ty-par and water runoff to framing and electrical. If one can't build it to stay for 50 years, regardless of weather. Minus tornado's, and floods, than they should not be built. Ya I know 50 years isn't long, but that is the life span of most plywood Ya the glue starts to break down after that.
