| My husband & I would like to move to North Carolina, but which city?
We love nascar, riding our goldwing and college football. Jeff is an experienced machinist for over 30 years and I have a new career as a payroll processor and previously for 25 years as an administrative assistant. We want to get out of the extreme cold of Minnesota and enjoy the green and mild weather. We want to rent, not own, live in a nice neighborhood and make some great friends. Any ideas?

I moved to Charlotte from NYC about six years ago. The weather is the first thing you will love, although it does get very very hot down here in the summer. As an Administrative assistant, you would have many opportunities as the countries two major banks, Bank of America and Wachovia have their corporate offices here. I'm not sure about machinist work though. There are some things you should also know about Charlotte and NC. The tax rate here is very high IMO, You pay personal property tax every year on everything from your car to your pets. The state tax rate is almost 8% and the NC Dept of Revenue offers practically nothing in terms of tax breaks for the average citizen. The city is also sufferring from the massive amount of people who have moved here during the past ten years. They cannot keep up with the growth and I think it was very poorly planned for. The traffic is horrendous everywhere. On the bright side, there are literally hundreds of beautiful apartment home complexes to chose from. Whatever you can think of from the simplest to the most luxerious is available. The ARTS have also come a long way since I moved here, and the downtown area is growing by leaps and bounds. Directly North of the University City area is Concord, but even if you lived in University City, it's only a 15 minute ride to Nascar. All in all it's nice here, but I don't think I will live out my life here. Another nice thing about Charlotte is that almost everyone who lives here came from another state, so there is a nice mixture of different cultures. Beware of the drivers though! They don't use trun signals, don't understand the concept of yielding when making a left hand turn at a green light, nor pedestrain right of way downtown, but if you can deal with that and the traffic, you'll like it here. The Mountains and the Beach are both a short drive away, and even a visit to Disney is no more than 8 hours. Good Luck! |
