Fargo North Dakota

When I think about North Dakota, the only thing that comes to mind is... Fargo, the movie.

So, anybody been there? And do they really talk like "that"?

I have met few people that really talk like that. The accents in that movie were way exaggerated. I have some relatives in that area.

Re: Fargo North Dakota

Well there maybe a few but I have never experienced any .I have a couple cousions that live in Fargo, an relatives in on that side of the state, starting in Fergus falls south to Morris MN , an everybody I have ever met or dwelt with sounded normal to me .I could be just use to it though. when I saw the movie I’m like what! that part of the state many years ago had a lot of immigrants Germans Norwegians an Swedes .My great grandparents came over from Germany an Norway an homesteaded some land around there along with many others that did the same. back then the gov would give you 160 acres to homestead on for farming . I would say Fargo is a fairly good sized city . as a whole it is actually 2 cities, there is Moorhead on the MN side of the red river, an Fargo on the ND side, the red river around Fargo runs north to Canada not south like most others .There are some collages up there NDSU ,Moorhead state , Concordia are the three bigger ones I know of .the land around Fargo is part of the red river valley formed when the glaciers came through, fairly flat an rich for farming .

I have some cousins in Fargo, I am not sure exactly where now. Most of my extended family is in Fergus Falls, some of them drive to Fargo for work.

Interesting ! my cousin in battle lake her son lives in Fargo during the week fixes avionics For some airline . have another cousin a lawyer in Fergus another one builds commercial buildings an houses , used him to frame an shingle mine years ago, another one she married a farmer out west on the way to Wahpeton his family run a few thousand acres. When I was a kid mom use to send me up on the train to Fergus , I’d stay with the relatives for about 2 weeks every year during the summer. My uncle had a cabin on Ottertail lake learned how to water ski there .I have so many memories as a kid up there. Road my first snowmobile up there. Not so much the Fergus area any more but south a little I try to make it up there 3 or 4 times a year. I just love it up there , if I could I would move up there. My cousins would get mad at me I called it fungus falls.

Thumbs up Re: Fargo North Dakota

What a small world...I never dreamed anyone that I would ever meet would even know where Battle Lake or even Fergus Falls was! One of the things that I miss the most, living in that area, is the rural, small-town ambiance. The work ethic was, by far, the best I had ever seen to this day.

My relatives are almost all Norwegian...they all live within about 50 miles of one another and they have a very intense Scandinavian accent. T.S. is absolutely correct...most people in that area have the "Fargo accent" but it really isn't nearly as exaggerated as in the movie. Uff-da was something I heard on a daily basis. It basically means "Oh my goodness!". My mother always used to ask if I wanted to "come with" whenever she was going somewhere. When I would say the same thing in Texas, people would ask...come with where? Come with ME...you know, come with! My dad would say "Oh, shoot" very often, also. It's kind of humorous, now that I think about it!

I've been to Fargo many times. My parents have relocated to Frazee, which is a stone's throw to Detroit Lakes. I'm not quite as impressed with that area, but Fargo is the nearest "big city" (about an hour away) and they do most of their clothes shopping there. Fargo is a very nice city for it's population and it has a lot of amenities...it's a great place to raise children...anywhere in that area. My opinion, of course.

Re: Fargo North Dakota

Another thing that I was ridiculed for was asking for some 'pop'. In Texas, people had no clue what I was requesting. I learned quickly that 'soda' was the proper term. Now I visit Minnesota and ask for 'soda' and people ask me if I want Club Soda or Perrier water. Uff da is still one of my favorites, though!

Re: Fargo North Dakota

That's crazy! I'm surprised that the Texas area isn't all yellow...very interesting. I never cease to learn...no matter what it may be. Here I am, still trying to figure out what a porch monkey is...and THEN try to save it. It's a never-ending process!

Okay, thanks curious...I've actually never heard that before. As for the beer, I would definitely opt for the Coors. Blue Moon has recently become my favorite, though.

Here is the movie scene that I took the quote from. Jenbar called me racist for having it, but I don't think it is being used in a racist context.

Re: Fargo North Dakota

I agree that it was funnee! But please, help me out here.
I thought I'd seen reference that the term came from the movie "Fargo" - but this scene looks like nothing I saw in that movie ...
so, can you tell me? Thanks

They were talking about the quote in my signature. It is from Clerks 2, not Fargo. We just got a little off topic here.

Bitterly cold. Temperatures frequently get below zero especially January and February...the windchill factor is drastic. But people up there are used to it. Very friendly and down to earth people, though, with cute accents!

Fargo is the home of Nordic Needle, one of the best needlework shops in the USA. They have a website. They do both retail and wholesale business.
